Job Title: Apprentice Category Specialist
Location: This is a regional role covering our sites across Hampshire, Sussex, and Kent. Regular travel within these areas will be required.
You will also be expected to attend the University of Brighton once a week and our Falmer office as needed.
There may be the possibility of hybrid working; however, this will depend on the needs of the business.
Contract Type: Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday – Friday
Salary: £24,288 per annum
Job Overview
We’re excited to offer a new opportunity for an Apprentice Category Specialist to join Southern Water’s dynamic Procurement team.
Based in one of the largest procurement departments in the South East, this role is perfect for individuals who are passionate about data, commercial strategy, and making a tangible impact on business outcomes.
You’ll work alongside experienced Procurement professionals to support and deliver sourcing, supplier management, stakeholder engagement, and commercial decision-making activities. With support from your Mentor and Line Manager, you’ll build the skills and experience needed to become a proficient Category Specialist—helping to shape the future of our supply chain strategy.
As An Apprentice, Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Supporting the development and execution of category strategies
- Gathering and analysing internal and external data to inform procurement decisions
- Assisting in the running of procurement events and negotiations
- Supporting sourcing strategy development, contract management, and supplier engagement
- Working with internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure value delivery
- Participating in supplier performance reviews and business improvement initiatives
- Planning and coordinating procurement activities using tools like MS Project or Gantt charts
Training Overview
This apprenticeship programme will equip you with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in Procurement and Category Management. Through a combination of classroom learning and real-world experience, you’ll become proficient in areas such as market analysis, contract negotiation, data-driven decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and the use of IT systems relevant to procurement.
Upon completion, you’ll gain a recognised Level 3 qualification, and the confidence to take your career forward within one of the region’s leading procurement environments.
Progression
Graduates of the programme will be well-positioned to progress into roles such as:
- Category Specialist
- Category Manager
- Sourcing Manager
- Supplier Relationship Manager

About You
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Curious, adaptable and eager to learn
- A great communicator and collaborator
- Confident with IT systems and fast learner
- Interested in supply chains, procurement or business strategy
- Organised and self-motivated with strong attention to detail
You’ll Ideally Have
- You will need to have your own vehicle and driver’s licence. This is a regional role and you will need to attend site visits
- GCSEs (Grade C/4 or above) in Maths and English (or equivalent)
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- An interest or passion for commercial areas such as sales, negotiations, or project planning
- Experience in construction, engineering, or mechanical/electrical fields is a bonus but not required
