Home Education Officer– Inclusion and Welfare Team
2 Year, Full-time, Fixed Term Contract
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Home Education Officer to join our Inclusion and Welfare Team at Plymouth City Council. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player to act as a specialist officer in the area of Elective Home Education (EHE). This role supports the Council in fulfilling its statutory responsibilities to ensure that every child educated otherwise than at school receives a full-time and efficient education.
Key Responsibilities
You will act as a champion for home-educated children and young people, serving as the main point of contact for families who have chosen to home educate.
You will hold your own extensive caseload providing specialist support and guidance to families regarding Elective Home Education.
Liaise with and support parents to ensure the quality of education provided is appropriate and sustained.
Conduct home visits—both pre-arranged and unannounced—to monitor educational provision and offer constructive feedback and advice.
Collaborate with professionals, schools, and statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people.
Attend relevant meetings and contribute to integrated working practices across Children’s Services.
Essential Criteria
A relevant Level 4 professional qualification or equivalent (e.g., teaching, social work, HLTA).
Demonstrable knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory/non-statutory guidance.
Demonstrable understanding of the roles of other agencies (e.g., Children’s Social Care, SEND, Youth Offending Team, CAMHS).
Demonstrable Working knowledge of child protection procedures.
GCSE Grade C/5 or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Skills And Attributes
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Strong planning, organisational, and ICT skills.
