Product Line Architect – Naval Optronics
Glasgow - Hybrid
Thales is a world leader in the design and manufacture of products for the worldwide defence, aerospace and security markets. Naval Optronics is a key and growing product area for the Optronics and Missile Electronics (OME) business line of Thales UK.
A senior vacancy has arisen for Product Line Architect – Naval Optronics reporting to the OME UK Technical Director and working closely with the Naval Business Director, to provide strategic leadership of our Naval engineering and technology.
The role will be of interest to professionals with expertise in military Naval Optronics who already work at a strategic level in Industry or the military with a focus on the Naval Optronics and the ambition to take on larger strategic responsibilities in that domain. This includes Periscopes, Optronic Masts, Hybrid Periscopes, their capability, control and integration into submarine platform systems.
The Product Line Architect is responsible for the architecture, technical choices & roadmap throughout their lifecycle of the products within the product group.
Key responsibilities:
- Acts as the technical leader for the product group.
- Defines & manages all Product Line Engineering (PLE), product variability, commonality & re-use across the product group & throughout the Product lifecycle.
- Analyses the Product needs/requirements, to define the Product technical solution
- Prepares the technical part of the Product Plan
- Within the product architecture, seeks to maximise re-use of building blocks/technology from other OME UK products, other Thales UK products and products from Thales worldwide.
- Alerts Business Sector Director, PLM and Technical Director when technical issues arise in the product group.
- Works closely with the Design Authorities of bids & projects using Product Line Management products to detect and mitigate risks of divergence with Product Line technical roadmap.
- Operational needs - working with users (especially Royal Navy and export customers) to solicit and understand the operational needs for Naval Optronic systems and link operational needs to the proposed technical solutions in the Technology Plan.
- External funding - identification and pursuit of sources of external technology funding (MoD, DSTL, DASA, Industry, Government) to support activities within the land domain.
Skills, Qualifications And Experience Required
- Bachelor, Masters or Post-Doctoral Degree (BEng, BSc, MEng, MSc, EngD or PhD) in a mathematical, scientific or engineering subject
- Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills
- Naval Optronics development, integration or operation - demonstrated capability in current or previous roles.
- Experience developing or integrating Naval Optronic Systems (desirable but not essential)
- Knowledge of key trends in Naval Optronics and the passion to steer the capability in Thales to profitably benefit from these trends
- Business savvy with an entrepreneurial streak when it comes to seeking out and developing new products
