Overall Purpose of The Job
- Provide specialist knowledge and expert advice to the Company on the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety management systems aboard leisure vessels, ensuring compliance with all relevant maritime safety regulations and promoting a proactive safety culture among crew and guests. This includes oversight of the maintenance, inspection, and regulatory compliance of Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire Fighting Equipment (FFE).
Key Responsibilities And Tasks - To establish and maintain safe and compliant procedures for the inspection, testing, maintenance, and operational readiness of LSA, FFE, and other safety-critical equipment and systems across the fleet.
- To ensure that all safety-related equipment and systems are operated and maintained in accordance and in compliance with our Vessel Management System, approved procedures, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements.
- To ensure comprehensive and accurate documentation is maintained regarding safety drills, equipment inspections, non-conformities, and corrective actions, as part of the vessel’s safety management records.
- To carry out regular safety inspections and audits onboard vessels, either scheduled or as requested to verify compliance with internal safety standards and external regulatory requirements, ensuring that LSA and FFE are fully operational and correctly maintained.
- To advise the Technical Director, Head of Ship Management, and Fleet Superintendents on appropriate levels of safety equipment spares, FFE/LSA consumables, and required safety signage and documentation to ensure uninterrupted compliance and vessel readiness.
- To monitor changes in international and flag-state safety regulations and provide guidance to the Technical Director on updates needed to vessel procedures, documentation, and equipment to ensure ongoing compliance.
- To act as the Company’s safety representative for major projects involving safety system upgrades, refits, or dry docking—ensuring that all modifications to LSA, FFE, and related equipment and systems are completed to regulatory and operational standards.
- To liaise with shipyards, contractors, and classification societies during refits, dry dockings, or major upgrades to oversee the correct integration, testing, and certification of new or modified safety systems.
- To ensure that the maintenance and servicing LSA, FFE, and other safety equipment and systems is carried out in accordance with safe procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- To advise the Head of Ship Management and Superintendents on safety-related repairs, renewals, and upgrades that should be included in dry dock specifications and maintenance planning, ensuring continued compliance.
- To provide guidance to the Head of Ship Management and Superintendents in the event of a serious safety equipment failure or incident, and, if required, to attend the vessel to deliver on-site safety oversight, investigation, and support.
- To evaluate and report on the competence of onboard personnel responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and operation of LSA and FFE, based on observations during vessel visits, drills, and routine safety activities.
- To advise the Head of Ship Management and Fleet Superintendents on cost estimates for repairs and maintenance of LSA and FFE, and other safety related items.
- To provide expert safety-related technical advice on the procurement, upgrade, or major repair of LSA and FFE, ensuring compliance, suitability for vessel operations, and cost-effectiveness.
- To provide information as necessary to assist in the preparation of claims
- Authority to develop operating procedures for implementing approved policies, and to monitor that such procedures are properly followed
- Liaises closely with: The Technical Director, Head of Ship Management, Fleet Superintendents, HSSEQ Superintendents, Group Purchasing Service

Essential
- Recognised qualification as a Marine Engineer, Nautical position, or a related maritime discipline, with relevant experience in vessel safety management, LSA, and FFE systems.
- Good command of the English language, written and spoken.
- Good communication (oral and written) skills.
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and interact with people at all levels.
- Good planning and organisational skills.
- An ability to develop creative and effective solutions to problems.
Desirable
- Experience supporting safety compliance and equipment specification during newbuild or major refit projects, including coordination with shipyards, class, and flag authorities.
- Previous experience in a Safety Superintendent or senior safety/operations position within the Marine Industry.
