Grade: Band 3
Contract type: TfL, Permanent

Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in our Operating Assets teams and, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than tubes, roads, buildings and bridges. This is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.
As Senior Engineer – Components and Configuration, you will be an excellent communicator with experience of providing professional engineering assistance to projects and maintenance organisations and have a clear understanding of how the Permanent Way asset lifecycle evolves. The Components & Configuration team within Permanent Way Engineering is responsible for delivering new products which reduce the whole life cost of track. This includes the introduction of new components which are managed through trial installations through to the Product Information Register (PIR) (formerly Approved Product Register) and handover into maintenance. You will need to develop relationships with suppliers, designers, track renewals and maintainers to identify issues at all stages of the product lifecycle.
The team is also responsible for the management of the track standards on behalf of the Head of Permanent Way Engineering. This will require you to be capable of understanding how standards are developed and maintained to reflect the operational railways within TfL. Above all you will need to be able to challenge standards through demonstrating an ability to understand the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what’. You will need to demonstrate how As Low As Reasonably Practical (ALARP) principles can be used to justify risk based decisions which affect the overall safety of the railway.
You will need to have a passion for understanding how the track operates within a system of systems, and be capable of working alongside, among others, rolling stock and signalling engineers to be capable of solving problems which need a systems approach. You will need to be a person who can understand very complex detail but be able to communicate this to a wide range of stakeholders within the overall systems context.
The role requires a positive, self-motivated, and independent individual, enthusiastic, outgoing and approachable with a high level of integrity and initiative, able to work well with people and willing to help others.
