We are seeking an experienced Accountant, to be based in our Derby office. This role will be instrumental in supporting the business by undertaking Audit activities, as well as the the preparation of Tax returns, and assisting with the provision of a comprehensive accounting. The position is predominantly office based but would include some need to stay away during field work
Your responsibilities
Here's a bit more on what you can expect to be doing day-to-day:
Statutory Audit Tasks:
Planning and Preparation for Audits:
- Preparing audit plans and risk assessments based on the client’s financial records.
- Liaising with clients to gather necessary documentation and information before the audit.
- Preparing audit schedules and timelines.
Execution of Audits:
- Conducting audit fieldwork, including testing and verification of financial statements.
- Reviewing the client’s internal controls, identifying areas of risk, and suggesting improvements.
- Performing substantive testing of balances and transactions, including revenue, expenditure, and payroll.
- Evaluating the accuracy of financial reporting, ensuring compliance with UK GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) or IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards).
- Identifying potential misstatements or irregularities in the financial statements.
Audit Reporting:
- Preparing audit documentation, audit reports, and management letters.
- Discussing audit findings with clients and offering recommendations for improvement.
- Ensuring the audit documentation meets regulatory and professional standards.
- Assisting in the preparation of audit opinions and ensuring timely submission of reports.
Finalising Audits:
- Reviewing and finalising audit files for sign-off by senior managers or partners.
- Assisting with post-audit client meetings to review audit results and action plans.
Tax Work:
Preparation and Filing of Tax Returns:
- Preparing and submitting corporate tax returns (CT600) and personal tax returns (Self Assessment) to HMRC.
- Ensuring clients are compliant with VAT, corporation tax, income tax, and capital gains tax regulations.
- Conducting tax planning to optimise clients' tax positions.
- Identifying opportunities for tax deductions, credits, and other incentives to reduce liabilities.
Advising on Tax Matters:
- Offering advice on various tax matters, including VAT, capital allowances, tax reliefs, and inheritance tax.
- Providing guidance on the tax implications of business structures, mergers, acquisitions, and disposals.
Tax Compliance and Filing Deadlines:
- Monitoring and ensuring that clients comply with all relevant filing and payment deadlines for taxes.
- Corresponding with HMRC on behalf of clients to resolve any tax-related queries or issues.

About you
We think you’ll need the following experience and qualifications to succeed in the role:
- Accounting industry, or Practice experience is mandatory
- Have good communication skills, enabling you to work effectively and collaboratively in a team
- Ability to develop professional and technical knowledge
- Familiarity with accounting software
- AAT, ATT, CTA, ACA or ACCA qualified, or part qualified
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
