The City of London Corporation is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Countryside Manager to join the team at Epping Forest. This unique and rewarding role plays a key part in maintaining and protecting one of London’s most important green spaces.
The successful candidate will support the day-to-day operations of the Forest Keeper team, contribute to land and conservation management, and promote responsible use of the Forest and Buffer Lands. You will be an attested constable under the Epping Forest Acts, with responsibilities including public engagement, enforcement, and emergency response.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise Forest Keepers, Assistant Forest Keepers, volunteers, and contractors.
- Support the Countryside Manager in daily operations and deputise in their absence.
- Lead patrols and enforcement duties, ensuring byelaws and legislation are upheld.
- Respond to incidents, coordinate with emergency services, and manage illegal encampments.
- Deliver high-quality public engagement and customer service.
- Organise and oversee volunteer-led conservation and land management projects.
- Maintain health and safety standards and contribute to risk assessments and training.
Essential Requirements
- A Level 3 qualification in countryside management or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Experience supervising teams, volunteers or contractors.
- Strong knowledge of countryside/public access land management and related legislation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to work unsocial hours on a rota, including weekends.
- Sound awareness of health and safety and environmental regulations.
Desirable Qualifications
- Health and Safety qualification (or willingness to obtain).
- Emergency First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience working with stakeholders in a public-facing environment.
- Knowledge of SSSI and SAC legislation and management.
Additional Information
- The role involves physical activity, including lifting and working in all weather conditions.
- Lone working and shift work (including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends) is required.
- The post requires a Standard DBS check.
- An unsocial hours payment also applies to this post which will be confirmed prior to your starting date
