Key Information

Job title: Assistant SHE Environment Manager (Capital x 2), Assistant SHE Environment Manager (Operations x 1)

Salary: £44,080

Grade: Band 2

Contract type: Permanent (TfL)

Location: Endeavour Square (Stratford), Palestra (Southwark) and occasionally across various TfL offices and sites (London), include hybrid working where possible

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Overview Of Roles

These roles exist to support delivery of TfL’s Corporate Environment Plan through the provision of technical environmental advice to the business. There are 3 vacancies, 2 roles supporting capital projects and one providing support to TfL Operations.

The successful candidates will provide support to SHE Environment Managers and other stakeholders to enable the business to deliver environmental improvement. They will support the business to deliver TfL’s environmental plans and goals and enable them to effectively manage environmental risks and compliance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support delivery of TfL’s Corporate Environment Plan across the business. Coordinate and track activities and progress against plans to ensure continued progress.
  • Provide environmental advice and guidance to TfL colleagues . This could be through activities such as supporting with delivery of environmental risk assessments or environmental appraisals as required.
  • Support with the provision of environmental input into procurement processes, developing contractual clauses, assessing tenders, and monitoring contractors’ performance.
  • Support the collation and interpretation of environmental performance data and support with upskilling the business partner teams and the business to manage and use the data.
  • Be a champion and advocate for environment.

Key interfaces

The role will involve interfacing with a range of internal and external partners including:

Environmental and Sustainability colleagues. SHE Business Partners within the wider SHE Directorate. Operational Colleagues. Project delivery teams (including Sponsors, Project Managers etc). Engineering colleagues and Designers. Construction Managers, Procurement teams, Town Planning colleagues. External consultants, contractors and regulators.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Ability to work at pace and make things happen, both independently and collaboratively within a team and with colleagues across a large, complex organisation. (Essential)
  • Ability to advise the business on the management of environmental risks and compliance with TfL’s systems and legislative requirements. (Essential)
  • Ability to effectively support the business to identify, understand and deliver their environmental obligations. (Essential)
  • Ability to hold the business to account and ensure compliance. (Desirable)
  • Ability to communicate environmental concepts and solutions and to influence your key stakeholders (Desirable)
  • Ability to prioritise workload and have a strong communication, collaboration, and diplomacy skills to ensure the business is effectively supported and held to account. (Essential)

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of environmental issues, legislation, standards and best practice (Essential)
  • Strong knowledge of environmental management systems (Desirable)
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the issues TfL faces and the political framework in which TfL operates (Desirable)
  • Good knowledge of procurement processes and activities (Desirable)
  • Good knowledge of project management principles (Desirable)
  • Good knowledge of whole life carbon management (Desirable)

Experience

  • Supporting the evaluation and management of environmental issues and risks in projects, contracts and operations (Desirable)
  • Providing environmental advice to projects or businesses (Desirable)
  • Assisting with environmental improvement programmes, contract design, managing external consultants for specialist and technical environmental services (Desirable)
  • Supporting assurance activities to ensure management systems are consistently adhered to and that environmental legislation and best practice are complied with. (Desirable)
  • Reviewing environmental reports and deliverables from Contractors and Consultants (Desirable)
