Associate Built Heritage Consultant

SLR’s Archaeology & Heritage team operates across European Region from our UK offices in London, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Southampton, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield. We advise our clients on a wide range of projects, across multiple sectors and throughout the planning process.

Key services include: feasibility and design input, due diligence, formulation and undertaking of desk-based and field-based investigation and mitigation strategies, and discharge of planning conditions. From small-scale proposals for single residential properties to large-scale multi-disciplinary EIA projects on behalf of both private- and public-sector clients, we pride ourselves on delivering successful projects and adding value for our clients.

We are currently seeking a high-calibre candidate to join our expanding built heritage team, potentially from any of the south-east offices, and to work on a wide range of projects across the UK. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to undertake a range of exciting projects, as well as the opportunity to have a major role in developing our client base in the Built Environment sector.

About your role

You will have a fantastic opportunity to support the ongoing development of our built heritage advisory team with a particular focus on delivering a range of projects within the built environment sector of varying scales, for a diverse range of clients and in a variety of national and regional historic contexts.

Commensurate with your experience, you will be delivering projects ranging from the research, preparation of and contribution to appraisal and feasibility studies, heritage statements and impact assessments, desk-based assessments, statements of significance, listed building consent applications, listing enhancements/delistings, conservation management plans and master planning, and retrofitting guidance and assessments.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Providing consultancy advice to colleagues and clients
• Providing direct design feedback to architects on behalf of our clients
• Reporting to clients and senior colleagues on a regular basis
• Managing / undertaking a wide range of historic environment projects to time and budget
• Preparing fee proposals, setting budgets and maintaining project finance, where required
• Attending consultation events related to projects, in particular consultations with Historic England, Local Authority Conservation staff and statutory amenity societies
• Negotiating effective methodologies and proportionate scopes of desk-based and field-based work
• Involvement in site inspections
• Preparing authoritative and robust heritage documents in support of planning applications, including heritage statements and EIAs, to a high standard
• Undertaking business planning and marketing of SLR’s heritage services
• Strengthen existing client relationships and seek to expand the team’s client base where possible
• Line management of junior colleagues

About you

If you are interested in applying, we'd love to hear from you. In order to succeed, we'd envisage that you would be able to demonstrate:

• Proven capabilities and experience in a similar role (preferably 5-10 years post qualification) in a comparable heritage organisation
• A relevant degree-level (or higher) heritage-based qualification, or a demonstrably equivalent level of experience and/or accreditation
• A thorough knowledge of the UK planning system with respect to heritage, including current and emerging legislation, NPPF, and guidance
• Experience conducting research and identifying key receptors and assessing heritage significance, as well as defining impacts of proposals
• A track record of inputting into successful project delivery across diverse market sectors, including residential, commercial, infrastructure, renewables and regeneration
• Experience tendering for project work, writing fee proposals and defining and negotiating potential scope of work
• The ability to communicate well with colleagues, clients and consultees, and to relay complex information in an authoritative, intelligible and effective way
• Membership of CIfA and/or IHBC or working towards full membership of one/both
• Willingness to travel and a full driving licence are essential to the role
• Software skills in Microsoft office and GIS
