WSP specialise in airport planning and advisory for aviation infrastructure both in terms of planning new airports and assessing existing airports for their potential for redevelopment, expansion and operational improvement.

  • In terms of Airport Planning, the team delivers consultancy services relating to airport master planning, demand forecasting, capacity analysis, terminal and support facility planning, airfield planning and phasing, airside and terminal simulation modelling, and environmental and sustainability advice.
  • In terms of Aviation Advisory, the team provides aviation business and regulatory advice, including air traffic forecasting studies, regional and national policy studies, technical advisor roles for investors and lenders, economic analysis, research and benchmarking, technical due diligence for acquisitions and privatisations, and airport operations advisory.

We are currently seeking an Associate Director to lead the development of our Aviation Advisory business in the UK to help grow the project pipeline and expand the team. In this role, you will develop winning proposals and work on a range of aviation advisory projects across the UK and Internationally with a strong focus on delivering aviation advisory services and ‘future ready’ advice.

We are looking for a strategic business thinker with a large network of industry contacts who will drive the development of the advisory business and seek project opportunities that make a real impact in the aviation sector. Our clients include airport owners, airport investors, financial institutions, governments, and regulatory bodies, leading to pursuing a diverse range of interesting opportunities and projects across aviation advisory.

In addition to this business development role, we anticipate that you will provide expert technical and business advice and analysis to our clients through the management and delivery of projects, working alongside other aviation technical teams, including air traffic forecasts, business plans, technical due diligence and technical advisor roles.

It is expected that you will have excellent inter-personal and communication skills as you will be part of our wider Airport Planning and Advisory team, a multi-cultural/multi-disciplinary team based across the UK. It includes junior and senior members with planning and advisory consulting backgrounds, all passionate about what we do in the aviation sector.

A Little More About Your Role…

  • Working with the Airport Planning & Advisory leader and senior advisory colleagues to develop the business strategy for aviation advisory services and identify the target project pipeline;
  • Undertake Business Development activities including communicating and meeting with client contacts to explore new project opportunities and promote the services and experience of WSP;
  • Attending and presenting at Aviation Industry business and networking events to promote WSP’s activities and to keep our team’s knowledge of industry trends current and relevant;
  • Contributing to and/or leading the preparation of technical bids and fee proposals for potential new projects;
  • Contributing to or leading the management and delivery of aviation advisory projects, including for example, Market Assessments; Traffic Forecasting, Business/Financial Planning; Technical advisory and due diligence, benchmarking exercises etc;
  • Provision of strategic advice on business planning, aeronautical and non-aeronautical revenues, operating costs, and CapEx to clients such as airport investors, airport owners, airport operators, airport regulators, and financial institutions;
  • Preparation of presentations and reports and presenting to clients and at internal business meetings; and
  • Mentoring and developing advisory staff to support and guide them in their development.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…

  • An accredited bachelor’s degree within Engineering, Aviation, Planning, or Economics, and preferably a master’s degree in an airport or aviation sector related subject;
  • Chartership with a relevant professional body is preferred, but not mandatory;
  • A detailed working knowledge of aviation advisory services and particularly experienced in the aviation mergers and acquisitions market, with a comprehensive network of client contacts including airport investors, airport owners, airport operators, airport regulators, and financial institutions;
  • A strong practical understanding of airports and the aviation industry, including best practices and experience of aviation planning, business strategy, feasibility, financial appraisal, demand and capacity, economics, market assessments, benchmarking, and traffic forecasting;
  • Substantial diverse experience of working as an aviation advisory consultant delivering projects and having directly dealt with clients in the UK and Europe;
  • Excellent project management skills and experience, and able to comfortably manage a range of medium to large size consulting projects;
  • High-quality data analysis skills, with Economic and Financial modelling skills being advantageous;
  • Produced high-quality presentations and reports, and possess strong presentational (verbal and written communication) skills to both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • An interest in providing sustainable future ready advice, including decarbonisation, SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), Net Zero initiatives and development would be helpful but not essential;
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
  • Fluent in the English language with excellent verbal communication and writing skills. Additional language skills could be beneficial; and
  • A willingness to travel nationally and internationally.
