The EMEA Team
The General Counsel & Risk team supports 25 EMEA offices and comprises over 60 people based in London, Newcastle, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. The teams work closely, dealing with client and matter inception, client terms negotiation, AML, financial crime, sanctions and general
The Role
The role will focus mainly on client and matter intake (‘CMI’) issues (specifically conflicts, confidentiality and disclosure) but will also involve terms negotiation and general compliance related queries. The role will report to the Head of CMI; but will also work closely with the Head of Conflicts.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise the business on conflicts of interest, confidentiality and disclosure issues.
- Work with global member firm Compliance Teams on potential conflicts.
- Review and advise on engagement letters, NDAs, and panel appointments.
- Support the senior team in managing regulatory issues and risk management queries.
- Manage partner and fee earner compliance with their duties under SRA Standards, Economic Sanctions, Market Abuse Regulation, and other laws.
- Deliver wider compliance projects and review NRF EMEA policies, procedures, and practice notes.
- Manage, train, mentor, and develop other General Counsel & Risk team members and (in some cases) be responsible for their day to day supervision and technical development.
- On occasion, take escalations from CMI team members who are covering an evening shift as well as provide occasional on-call cover for urgent conflict queries over the weekend.
Skills And Experience Required
- Qualified solicitor, REL, RFL, or qualified in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa or the United States with 2-4 years PQE in an international law firm and, in addition, with a minimum of 2 years experience in a conflicts focused role in-house in a similar international legal practice.
OR
- Minimum 4 years’ experience working in a conflict of interest role in a similar international legal practice.
- Awareness of England & Wales professional conduct requirements and experience of applying England & Wales conflicts, confidentiality and client care rules and laws (a working knowledge of US conflicts rules is also desirable).
- Experience of managing/mentoring more junior team members.
- Excellent commercial judgement and ability to make risk based decisions on a daily basis.
- Analytical thinking, strong communication skills and experience of operating in a multi-cultural environment.
- High level of influencing skills
