Managing the UK's largest microbial strain collection with over 20,000 isolates, NCIMB serves as a vital resource for researchers and industrial partners globally.


NCIMB are expanding their core services in microbial identification and biological storage, particularly for the biotech and pharma markets. They have also developed new revenue opportunities by licensing their unique microbial strain collection, and investing in R&D work targeting sustainable products in areas like biofuels, biomaterials, renewable chemicals, and microbiome therapeutics.


The goal is to lead in industrial biotechnology, offering microbial solutions to global challenges, including net zero and sustainable manufacturing.


Chief Financial Officer (fractional)

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the CFO will manage the accounting practices and finance function with a focus on revenues generated from core microbiology services. The ideal candidate will improve the efficiency of NCIMB's finance function, trim cost and put processes in place to support business growth.


The ideal candidate should be able to operate strategically contributing to business planning, business growth and delivering shareholder value. This is a flexible position requiring an average commitment of 3-5 days per month, with the potential for increased involvement during key reporting or investment activities.


Key responsibilities

  • Manage the accounting and finance including manging a small admin team.
  • Point of contact for company Accountants
  • Board reporting including the presentation and analysis of management accounts; KPI’s and cash-flow forecasts
  • Annual accounts including tax computations
  • Budget setting
  • Create and present financial and tax strategy recommendations to CEO, including R&D tax credits and other mechanisms for tax relief


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant finance/accounting degree and qualifications
  • Finance role in a revenue generating life science service/biotech business
  • A track record delivering improvements including cost savings and efficiencies contributing to business growth
  • Familiarity with accounting software & CRM systems
  • Familiarity with research funding including grants and tax relief
