Job Description
Costain is due to be appointed as Delivery Partner by National Highways (NH) for delivery of the A47 Wansford to Sutton Dualling scheme. Our scope of work includes completion of the Detailed Design, Preparation for Construction and then Construction and Handover of the scheme. We are due to mobilise for the design phase in Summer 2025 with a planned start of construction works in Spring/Summer 2026. We expect some advanced works to also be instructed from Autumn 2025 onwards.
The scheme is part of a wider programme of improvements that NH are completing on the A47. This part of the programme includes the widening of 2.5km of the A47 from its junction with the A1 heading East towards Peterborough as well as works to the A1 to improve accesses to existing properties and to create a new slip road from the A1 southbound. There are also works to the local authority road network and to walking, cycling and horse riding routes to improve connectivity.
A Construction Manager is required to lead the delivery aspects on the scheme. During the development phase this will include the construction preparation included methodology, programme development and temporary works identification and planning. During the construction phase you will take on all delivery operations, working very closely with the Works Superintendent to ensure all works are delivered; safely, to program and within budget and give confidence to the management team and Client that the work is of a high quality, recorded and to the satisfaction of the client’s representatives. Location is flexible between Costain/Site/Client offices and home working during the development phase. Primarily site based during the construction phase.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring the prompt and safe delivery of all permanent and temporary works.
- Control and manage the Construction delivery engineering team ensuring package managers are assigned and all works are being planned and delivered.
- The development and management of robust working practices to support the design and teams to deliver a safe, efficient and production focused delivery.
- Monitoring performance working with the PMO and Lean & Performance leads to deliver performance improvements.
- Working with the design and construction teams to ensure that modern methods of construction are identified and embedded in our Designs.
- Building constructive relationships with across all aspects of the delivery team including our supply chain partners.
- Supporting the Commercial team to ensure accurate forecasting and package management.
- Ensure Quality and Planning for handover are embedded in delivery team’s culture with a right first time approach to delivery.
- Ensuring our works are planned and delivered in accordance with the Development Consent Order (DCO) and our Environmental Management Plans
- Working the Project Risk Manager and Commercial Team to ensure the timely identification and notification of risks and opportunities.
Qualifications
Essential
- Civil Engineering related qualification (HNC, HND, BSc, MSc, Beng, Meng)
- Minimum 5 -10 years’ experience of delivering infrastructure projects including:
- Knowledge and experience of highways construction.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- The ability to manage and control tasks and lead a team
- Willing to mentor and develop staff
- A cooperative and collaborative attitude to working with other disciplines
- Suitable academic qualification
- Relevant SHE qualification – SMSTS/IOSH
Desirable
- Experience of working with National Highways
- Relevant CSCS card
