Trainee Social Worker Role Profile

BA (Hons) Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship

Plymouth City Council (PCC) are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to train as a Social Worker, commencing in October 2025.

Through our partnership with the Open University, we offer a sponsored opportunity to undertake a three-year social work degree apprenticeship, which combines an opportunity for both work and study. On successful qualification, applicants will be able to register for the protected title of ‘Social Worker’ and will be eligible to apply for employment with Plymouth City Council’s Children Young People and Families Service. Applicants must be passionate about working with children, young people and families and ideally have some experience in this field. We are looking for resilient and dedicated people, who wish to pursue a long-term career in Social Work and who are committed to principles of public service.

Entry Requirements

  • Have GCSE grade 9–4/A*–C/Functional/Key Skills Level 2 in English and maths, or a certified equivalent.
  • Have the right to live and work in England
  • Demonstrate the potential to study at undergraduate level.
  • Agree to an enhanced DBS with lists check (i.e. checks against all registers including both children and vulnerable adults). This will be separately undertaken by The Open University and the University of Plymouth.
  • Complete a health check administered by both Plymouth City Council and the Open University. If, in exceptional circumstances, there are serious doubts about your fitness to practice on health grounds, you may be asked to undergo a medical examination. This examination could be at your own expense.
  • Be ready to be on a full time course that will predominantly be Monday to Friday 9-5pm.

Pay

Plymouth City Council will employ successful appointees as a full time Trainee Social Worker from August 2025. Salary: Grade F, £32,654.00 per annum. Successful appointees who are already employed by Plymouth City Council on Grade F will maintain their current salary. Plymouth City Council will also sponsor the appointee for the duration of their social work apprenticeship and will pay all Open University fees for the BA (Hons) Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship.

On completion of the apprenticeship, the appointee will be able to apply for a position as a Newly Qualified Social Worker (Grade G £36,124.00) on Plymouth’s nationally leading Early Career Framework.

Applications and Shortlisting

Applications should be submitted via the Plymouth City Council’s recruitment page. Only online applications will be accepted. Please note this is a sponsored opportunity and applicants should therefore not apply through the Open University website.

All applicants will need to follow the procedure stipulated below. No alternative dates can be provided.

  • All applicants should complete and submit a Plymouth City Council Application form. Your application should include relevant details which confirm that you meet all of the Open University’s entry requirements for the degree apprenticeship.

Closing date for Plymouth City Council Applications is Sunday 20 April 2025.

  • Shortlisting of Plymouth City Council Applications will take place on 22nd April 2025
  • Successful shortlisted applicants will be notified by 25th April 2025.
  • The shortlisted candidate will also have to complete an Open University application form which will they will then use to confirm that you meet their entry requirements.
  • Successful shortlisted applicants must be available to attend an Open University selection interview on a date between 9/6/25 – 27/6/25. Please note the exact date will be confirmed as soon as we have this from the Open University.

Please note: Candidates must have successfully completed all degree apprenticeship entry qualifications and must be able to provide physical evidence of this. Qualifications that are still in progress or where the result is pending, or where the candidate is unable to supply physical evidence of their qualifications in advance cannot be accepted.
