During this Cyber Apprenticeship (Apprentice Cyber Analyst) you will learn the tactical cyber defence operations used to defend UK Air traffic from Cyber threats every day.
NATS’ Cyber Analysts use tooling, procedures and processes to defend the systems used by Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) to safely manage the air traffic in the UK airspace, as well as our corporate networks. Our systems and equipment can be found in our Air Traffic Centres in Swanwick and Prestwick, at airports as well as at various (remote) sites across the UK.
As an Apprentice Cyber Analyst, you will support our operational cyber teams with your knowledge of the operational environment, learn how to triage cyber events, so that any incidents are identified and resolved quickly. You will also undertake intelligence sifting and acquisition, disseminate Threat Intelligence and undertake Targeted Acquisition Operations for specific indicators.
What will the apprenticeship involve?
This 3-year Cyber Apprenticeship provides exceptional preparation for a fulfilling career in the cyber defence for Critical National Infrastructure. The scheme is designed to bring new entrants into NATS with limited work experience through a structured training program.
This will provide you with the knowledge, skills and attitude required to become a Cyber Analyst. You will be assigned 1 day a week to work towards a formal qualification: a Level 4 Cyber Defender and Responder Apprenticeship. Alongside the formal education, NATS has designed an internal learning pathway to provide you with the required Air Traffic specific knowledge and skills, as well as provide an opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills too. You will get an opportunity to apply your new skills and knowledge on-the-job with support from experienced NATS staff.
During the first year you will be gaining a thorough understanding of the various cyber roles at NATS including a rotation in our Service Management Control Centre (SMCC). You will undertake a comprehensive induction programme as well as develop a skillset that will set you up for a successful career at NATS.
On completion of your induction and SMCC rotation, you will be allocated to the Cyber Defence Centre Operations team. This is where you will complete your apprenticeship and specialise. You will be based at one of the world’s busiest Air Traffic Control Centres at Swanwick.
During the first two years of your apprenticeship (from January 2026), you will be working towards your formal apprenticeship qualification (Level 4 Cyber Defender and Responder Apprenticeship). The Cyber Security Defender & Responder programme integrates live and online workshops with self-paced learning.
You will be assigned 1 day a week to work complete this work. Through the 3-year apprenticeship, after your induction period and SMCC rotation, you will be based in the Cyber Defence Centre Operations team.
