Design Manager - (Wastewater Treatment Projects)

Main Duties:

The Design Manager reports to the Technical Director and is responsible for the design of Aqua Operation’s (AOL) portfolio of projects within the Glanua Industrial Group

The projects will be varied, ranging from multi-million pound Industrial Effluent Treatment Plant design to upgrade works, refurbishments, asset care projects where the value of projects could be less than £0.5m.

At Aqua Operations, the design manager will be involved from the design of our projects, but with the added benefit of seeing the projects delivered, rather than design only, a benefit for those who want to actively see their designs becoming reality. The industrial market is fast paced, with often quick turn-arounds required and there majority of these projects are how we would describe as asset care, projects under a value of £0.5m for our industrial clients, where there is a strong interface with site operations.

The Head of Projects will come from a Water Background with experience of management of multi-disciplinary teams.

Main Duties:


  • Management of multidiscipline tasks and projects to programme, budget and quality.
  • Developing strong working relationships with our clients.
  • Co-ordination of multiple discipline inputs (including Civil, Structural and MEPICA, health and safety, sustainability, environment, planning) to achieve integrated designs/solutions.
  • Helping ensure successful integrated delivery of projects by working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary environment including working closely with our operational teams.
  • Assist in implementing our project BIM strategy including use of integrated design tools and data management systems.
  • Preparation of schedules of work, work breakdown structures and risk and interface schedules.
  • Contribute to Health and safety management of design including application of CDM.
  • Working towards delivering Net zero within projects.
  • Co-ordinate and implementation of HSE systems
  • Visible leadership on HSE issues at all levels both in the client organisation and within AOL.
  • Support the development of the ‘AOL’ culture of ownership, involvement and accountability for plant operations.


Knowledge & Experience:


  • Experience within a water background for the design of a range of products from low cost projects to multi-million pound complex systems.
  • Water / waste water, experience with experience of working with operational teams.
  • Experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • To be able to demonstrate through previous work experience technical and operational knowledge one or more areas of water / waste water treatment
  • Experience working directly with a Customer including attending, facilitating and contributing to meetings
  • Leadership experience
  • Demonstrable experience within a Multi-Disciplinary & Civil Engineering Design environment.
  • Experience in design delivery including multidisciplinary design.
  • Experience in Design and Build, both delivery on site and design based.
  • Up to date knowledge of current design codes and design software relating to the Multi-disciplinary delivery environment.
  • Sound commercial management experience when operating in a D&B environment.
  • Clear understanding of the commercial requirements of delivering complex multidisciplinary design and build projects and an appreciation of delivery risk.
  • Ability to collaborate successfully within a project and team environment and organise various disciplines with an aim of producing a co-ordinated design that is in best interest of team and the client.
  • Ability to manage, motivate and delegate within a project delivery environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to listen and take instruction
  • BIM/Digital competency.
  • Proactive commitment to health and safety.


Education & Training:


  • Engineering Degree (Civil, Mechanical etc) or equivalent qualification.
