Job Title: Director of Finance (interim)

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract to 31st Dec 2025 (with possibility of extension)

Working Hours: 33.75 per week (0.9 FTE)

Location: London, UK (with flexibility for occasional international travel)

Salary: £72,295 Gross per annum (to be pro rata)

The Finance Team and what you’ll be working on


ARTICLE 19’s Finance Team plays a critical role in supporting our global operations. The team is currently undergoing a period of transition and renewal, with a renewed focus on strengthening financial systems, improving compliance, and building a cohesive, collaborative finance function across our global offices.

As Director of Finance (interim), your strong strategic financial skills and an ability to provide hands-on and operational support to staff will ensure the team delivers on its priorities on time and with quality.

You will be comfortable operating in a complex international organisation with experience in leading during times of change, embedding new practices and ways of working to produce deliverables for the longer term.

What you will be doing day to day


In this strategic and hands-on role, your core responsibilities will include:


Planning, Budgeting, Forecasting and Organisational Restructuring

  • Supporting organisational restructuring in response to evolving donor priorities
  • Overseeing the development and monitoring of the global budget and cashflow forecasting


Financial Management

  • Leading ARTICLE 19’s statutory audit process
  • Ensuring compliance with financial policies, statutory and legal requirements
  • Supporting payroll and purchase ledger operations for the International Office


Finance System Implementation

  • Overseeing the continued implementation of the new finance system
  • Identifying operational improvements from system implementation


Project Management and Grant Compliance

  • Supporting the International Grant Accountant team, ensuring donor reports submitted on time and with quality
  • Ensuring donor compliance and effective business partnering across teams
  • Supporting cost recovery policy implementation


What you will bring to the role

You are an experienced and confident financial leader who thrives in complexity. You are comfortable leading through change, improving systems, and supporting people to grow and succeed.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Professional accounting qualification or equivalent experience
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Initiative, creative thinking, and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cross-cultural awareness
  • Confidence working both independently and collaboratively


Experience

  • Senior finance leadership experience, ideally in international NGOs or complex organisations
  • Proven ability to lead financial transformation and manage change
  • Experience managing people and supporting professional development
  • Familiarity with global financial compliance, donor reporting, and board engagement
  • Strong experience developing and implementing financial systems and controls


Other

  • Understanding of or interest in human rights or freedom of expression
  • Commitment to ARTICLE 19’s values and mission
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside normal hours (time off in lieu provided)
