The Education Welfare Services are part of Education Inclusion and are based in the Civic Centre, Morden with some hybrid working being offered.
The role of the EWO is to support families, students and schools to address attendance matters, enabling pupils to receive their entitlement to education and achieve good outcomes.
This position involves managing a caseload of allocated schools and being professionally accountable for the assessment of educational needs for children aged 4 - 16 years (Reception - Year 11) who attend Merton Schools. The other responsibilities of the service include the Education Navigator within Children and Families Hub, children missing education, elective home education, children in entertainment, child employment and chaperone licences.
An understanding of Working Together to Improve Attendance guidance and The Pupil Registration Regulation 2024 is important, as is the ability to be able to interpret data and look strategically at absences or attendance across a school. You must be able to show knowledge of the legal aspect of the role, be prepared to enforce with parents their responsibility to ensure their child’s education and be willing to issue Penalty Notices, prepare statements for court and appear as a witness on behalf of the LA.
You must also be able to build professional working relationships and deal effectively on the phone, in person or in writing with students, parents, Head Teachers, other education professionals including Ofsted Inspectors and other colleagues from the statutory and voluntary sector. You will be dealing in sensitive areas of work including child protection and safeguarding.
You need to have an interest and passion for education as well as experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team in a child focused organisation and a track record of providing advice and guidance. You need good IT skills particularly in Word and Excel. GCSE mathematics and English are essential with further qualifications (degree in a related field or professional qualification in a child related area) and a second language would be useful. You will be working in a supportive team and there are opportunities for training and development.
The post is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Baring Service check and you must be able to start on the 1.9.25.
