Job Introduction
Handelsbanken Plc’s finance department is responsible for statutory accounting and reporting, technical accounting, business/financial control, tax, and capital and liquidity planning and management. The in-house tax function is a small sub-department of Finance, based in the London Head Office. It is responsible for managing the UK’s tax strategy, operations, compliance, and policies.
The team is seeking to recruit an experienced Employment Tax Manager to help manage employment tax risks in the Handelsbanken group’s UK entities.
The Employment Tax Manager will report direct to the UK Head of Tax but will work collaboratively and proactively with our Human Resources function. As well as providing advice and guidance, this will be a hands on role.
It is expected that the Employment Tax Manager will have in-depth technical experience - gained at HMRC, with a top tier accountancy firm, or at an in-house tax department. The successful candidate will need to be able to work independently, and have excellent communication skills, attention to detail, good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, and a willingness to travel within the UK and to Sweden.
The role can be part-time (minimum 3 days a week) or full-time.
Main Responsibilities
- Providing employment tax input and advice into key projects and initiatives e.g. the introduction of new reward schemes, employee benefits, etc.
- Carrying out periodic reviews of existing employment tax processes / controls and acting as first point of contact for (internal) employment tax related queries
- Reviewing and where necessary creating employment tax policies and instructions
- Providing overview and assurance for annual employment tax regulatory submissions e.g. tax year end, PSA, P11D, Form 42, etc
- Keep up to date with relevant changes in regulations and best practice and proactively work with the HR function to make any necessary changes to policies, processes and/or systems
- Providing regular training & updates to HR, Payroll, Finance and other colleagues
- Managing employment tax related information requests from external auditors, HMRC, and/or the Group Tax department based in Sweden and supporting the HR function with expatriate related tax issues
- Reviewing and making recommendations regarding the bank’s travel and expenses policy, and conducting an annual review of compliance with the policy in time to report any taxable values via PSA or P11d; and involvement in CIS related matter / issues

- Extensive employment tax experience (either in-house or at top 10 accountancy firm), and ideally ATT/CTA qualified
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to analyse, articulate and present complex issues clearly and concisely
- Ability to build strong professional relationships at all levels and to represent Handelsbanken effectively (both internally and externally)
- Sustains a high level of drive, shows enthusiasm and a positive attitude that translates across the team
- Seeks out development opportunities for self and others
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, and a willingness to travel to within the UK and to Sweden
