Description
Environmental Operations is based at the Waste Services Depot on Millfields Road and consists of Waste Operations, Estate Cleaning and Hygiene Services. Waste activities include street cleansing, refuse & recycling collection, commercial waste services, market cleansing, Gully Cleaning, Winter Maintenance graffiti/fly poster removal and street washing. Estate Cleaning covers internal and external cleaning of Hackney housing estates. Hygiene Services deals with stray dogs, pest control, including rodents and insects, and manages public toilets around the borough. We employ around 500 staff and over 120 vehicles are used to deliver the services, which are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

There are a total of six Environmental Managers who manage Environmental Operations activities across the street and estate environments including street cleansing, refuse and recycling collection, commercial waste, markets, graffiti removal, Gully Cleansing Winter Maintenance, estate grounds and internal building cleaning.

Environmental Managers are expected to cover day, evening and night shifts as directed by the Borough Operations Manager, and take part in the weekend working rota including bank holidays when required.

You should have proven leadership and management skills and be a good communicator, with the ability to plan work, inspire and motivate staff under your control. You will be a team player who can coordinate work with other departments, businesses and service managers. Good judgement and decision making skills are essential in this role, as is being able to deal with staff in a professional manner.

You will be able to challenge poor work performance, conduct and attendance issues, whilst always ensuring that you work within the Council’s procedures. You will be highly motivated and flexible in your approach to your working hours, as the service can be at its busiest during public holidays and at weekends.

You will have direct responsibility for up to 100 staff and for the management of holidays, ensuring sufficient cover is available to deliver the service. A key part of your role is ensuring that staff are fully trained to do the work that they undertake and that the services are delivered in a safe manner that ensures, as far as possible, the safety of those carrying out the work and any members of the public that they come into contact with.

Ideally you will have a background in Waste Management with experience and a proven track record of both delivering services and the management of staff. You should have strong organisational skills with the ability to multitask. The ability to communicate verbally and in writing, along with being able to use computer applications effectively is essential.

The post holder is required to hold a full UK Driving Licence (no more than three penalty points), to hold or be working towards the IoSH Managing Safely certificate or equivalent, to hold a level 3 qualification in waste management or associated activities or to be able to demonstrate sufficient experience at this level of management.
