Role: Environment Manager

Salary: £55,596 to £63,797per annum

Location: Manchester, Leeds or York with travel required between all locations and project offices when required

Contract Type: Full time - Permanent.

Office Requirement: Hybrid. Minimum of 3 days a week per week in the office

Transpennine Route Upgrade

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is the largest Infrastructure project in the North delivering £10.7 billion Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 11 level crossings.

Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.

Brief Description

To provide professional environment and sustainability advice and support to enable TRU to manage environment and sustainability risks and opportunities in order to improve performance. This includes managing the relevant assurance and governance processes and supporting the Head of Sustainability with the management and implementation of environment and sustainability improvement programmes.

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for a passionate individual who wants to be part of the Sustainability Programme Team, to help drive the TRU Sustainable Development Strategy ‘Our Guiding Compass' and environmental delivery and performance across a complex structure. The ideal candidate will be confident, a driven self-starter and have a desire to make a real difference. TRU is a fast-paced major programme, and the ideal candidate needs to have experience and the skills to work in such a dynamic environment.

Key Qualities:

  • Experienced and capable of providing environmental and sustainability advice to a nationally significant infrastructure project.
  • Extensive construction project delivery experience to be able to hit the ground running.
  • Confident to raise concerns relating to environment and sustainability performance and leading on solutions.
  • Must have experience of managing environmental performance and driving solutions and change with a positive outcome.
  • Attention to detail to ensure periodic reporting is completed accurately and consistently.
  • Organised and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Resilient and willingness to overcome challenges.
  • Supportive and collaborative nature and works well as part of a team.


About The Role (External)

Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:

  • Deliver expert technical advice on environmental management and sustainability requirements to stakeholders across the Programmes, embedding requirements and performance measures into business wide processes and controls.
  • Implement the environment and sustainability aspects of the Programme Environment & Sustainable Development (E&SD) strategy and/or plans, working with all relevant business areas and the supply chain to enable successful delivery.
  • Work with project teams to determine practical and deliverable measures to improve the environmental and sustainability performance on projects. Drive the implementation of best practices through the project teams and the supply chain by capturing and sharing lessons learnt to deliver efficiencies.
  • Manage and deliver an appropriate governance framework that delivers risk based Level 2 assurance for the Programme on environmental and sustainability performance and drives continuous improvement.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, liaising with regulatory bodies and other agencies, developing partnerships with NGOs, working collaboratively with contracting organisations, maintaining effective liaison with other Regions/Programmes and aligned routes, and contributing to the national strategy.
  • Manage the delivery and implementation of environment and sustainability competence framework and associated education and training programme for the Programme, supporting staff to understand their responsibilities, and improve technical awareness of environmental aspects.
  • Develop internal and external environment and sustainability communications for the Programme such as cascades, briefings, lessons learnt, case studies, newsletters etc.
  • Build the desired environment and sustainability culture throughout the business unit to achieve continuous improvement and adoption of best practice.


We need you to have:

  • Member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM (or equivalent through experience).
  • Degree level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in environment / sustainability or other relevant subject (or equivalent through experience).
  • Demonstrable significant experience in managing environment / sustainability matters, with involvement in construction programmes across multi discipline areas.
  • In depth understanding of environment / sustainability legislation
  • Experience in implementing successful environmental / sustainability improvements.
  • Experience of working with management systems (e.g. ISO or equivalent)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a specific emphasis on influencing the views of peers, colleagues and stakeholders.


It would be advantageous if you have:

  • Masters level qualification in relevant subject
  • Experience of delivering Network Rail's Environment and Social Minimum Requirements Standard.
  • Full chartered member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM.
  • Rail industry experience
  • Auditing competency
