Genomics Englandpartners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics. We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments – with patients and participants at the heart of it all.

Job Description

Join our team as an intern in ethics!

We are thrilled to offer a unique opportunity for an undergraduate student (or recent graduate) to join Genomics England’s Ethics team for an 8-week internship this summer.

If you are:

  • an undergraduate student (or graduated less than a year ago),
  • enthusiastic about ethics, particularly research ethics in genomics, and
  • looking to gain some experience to develop in this industry,

…then we are looking for you!

During the internship, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct desk-based research about emerging topics in genomic research ethics (to be discussed with your manager),
  • Feed into the development of an internal learning module about this topic,
  • Present your research to the team at the end of your internship,
  • Help organise one of our recurring Journal Club sessions,
  • Shadow our team members, and join our usual team meetings to gain an understanding of a corporate environment,
  • Receive a careers session with CV feedback and interview tips from our People Team.

Qualifications

We are looking to offer this opportunity to someone pursuing an undergraduate degree, or within 1 year of graduation.

Advert closing date: Applications close at 5pm on Monday 21st April 2025. You will be notified soon after this date of whether you are invited to interview. We aim to interview in the weeks commencing 28 April and 5th May 2025 with a view to a starting in the first two weeks of June 2025. The interview will be held on MS Teams.

Hourly pay:This opportunity is paid at London Living wage (£13.85/hour). Payment will be made on a monthly basis. We will reimburse certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred in connection with your internship in accordance with our expenses policy. Travel expenses can be discussed on a case-by-case basis if travel to the office is required, depending on the location of the intern.

Annual leave

Genomics England provide 2.5 days annual leave per calendar month. This is pro-rated in the case of starting or finishing mid-month. This is greater than the statutory requirement but Genomics England does not intend to confer any employment status in providing this benefit.

We appreciate that you may wish to make the most of your time at Genomics England and not make use of these days during your internship. If this is the case, we will pay a sum equivalent to your annual leave in your final pay. Please discuss your preference with your manager.

Hours

There are no fixed hours of work for this internship but you can work with us for up to 37.5 hours per week. These will be agreeable with your manager on a weekly and monthly basis.

Blended working model

Genomics England operates a blended working modelas we know our people appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working can bring.We expect most people to come into the office a minimum of 2 times each month.However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. There is no expectation that people will return to the office full time unless they want to, however, some of our roles require full time on site attendancee.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum.Our office locations are: Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.

Onboarding background checks

As part of our recruitment process, all successful candidates are subject to a Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We therefore require applicants to disclose any previous offences at point of application, as some unspent convictions may mean we are unable to proceed with your application due to the nature of our work in healthcare.
