Finance Data Specialist
Job summary
Working within the Finance Department of a UK-based group of Lloyd's Insurance Market companies, under the ownership of China Re Group, this position is part of the Finance Operations Team.
We are seeking a proactive and self-motivated Finance Data Specialist to support our Finance BAU (Business As Usual) operational teams. This role requires a self-starter who can take initiative and work independently to enhance data analysis, lineage, visualizations, and reconciliations within BAU processes. The position also plays a key role in supporting Finance strategy initiatives.
Main duties
- Develop SQL stored procedures and Power BI dashboards to meet business data analysis requirements, enabling efficient and insightful reporting.
- Document the flow of insurance data from source systems, producing high-quality user stories, specifications, and data-flows to support monthly and quarterly reporting.
- Facilitate stakeholder discussions to ensure accurate data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
- Understand data across finance teams to define and prepare data requirements for finance initiatives, promoting alignment and operational efficiency.
- Assist with the data analysis and presentation of Balance Sheet reconciliations.
- Investigate reconciling differences identified in financial reconciliations and propose solutions to correct entries at the source system level.
- Develop process improvements and system enhancements to support efficient and accurate data production.
- Build strong relationships with IT and Financial Systems Teams to ensure seamless collaboration and system integration.
- Manage time effectively, prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines to avoid process blockers.
- Support the maintenance of a robust internal control environment, including liaising with internal and external auditors and ensuring timely delivery of required information.
- Participate in various ad-hoc projects as needed to support the wider Finance Operations team.
Our requirements
Technical skills
Essential
- Skilled in extracting data from SQL servers and presenting it effectively using SQL or PowerQuery.
- Familiarity with SQL, including SQL Server Management Studio and Analysis Services
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Power Platform tools, including PowerApps and Power BI
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders
Desirable
- Ability to capture and document finance data flows and lineage from root to branch, including how data is used in a business context
- Experience with Phinsys, including its configuration and integration within finance systems
- Proficiency with PeopleSoft or equivalent accounting software platforms
Education & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
- Experience or understanding of Business Analysis within Financial Services environments
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a Big Four accounting firm
- Familiarity with project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 or APM
