About the job.

We are looking for a GIS Technician to join our GIS and Research team within the Business Services Directorate on a 8-month fixed term contract. This role supports National Highways work in ensuring the creation and maintenance of GIS datasets, in relation to the operational estate, surplus land and Strategic Road Network.


As a GIS Technician, you will prepare data for the Land Registry accelerated registration programme and the production of spatial datasets to the business. Not only that, but the role also supports the delivery of paragraph 9.9 of the licensing agreement between Government and National Highways, facilitating the representation of land ownership and maintenance records.


Key responsibilities:

  • Accurately investigate, manipulate and present complex geospatial information, datasets and documents.
  • Interpret legal documents, imagery and other sources of information to capture, attribute and compile digital data to defined specifications.
  • Create National Highways digital record of operational interests within the GIS and collate and analyse relevant information to make decisions and inform effective decision making.
  • Identify and obtain maps, digital data and maintenance information from Local Authorities.
  • Generate geospatial datasets for business wide use to defined data specifications. Prepare geospatial outputs and plans for internal/external customers and stakeholders.


This is an 8-month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.


About you.

  • Degree or relevant experience in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Understanding of coordinate systems and digital representation including exposure to basic programming languages (HTML, Python).
  • Experience of effectively and efficiently utilising internal and external computerised mapping systems (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Knowledge and experience of MS Office software products to enable production/maintenance of a range of complex documents and spreadsheets.
  • Able to work in an office environment, to deliver an efficient customer service, and support delivery through ability to manage supply chain.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
