Job Summary
A GPA will support the GP(s) / ANP(s) smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP / ANP freeing up their time to focus on the patient.
Main duties of the job
Administration
Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patient
Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc
Results handling
Clinical
Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
When assisting clinicians to take a history of presenting problems and carry out basic checks required at each consultation including ECG, BP, Pulse, Temp, Pulse oximetry, weight, urine test, peak flow reading, Doppler, teledermy etc.
The testing and result recording of clinical specimens.
Issuing prescriptions as requested. Ensure safe management of patient drug usage and query with doctor any discrepancies on prescription ordering. Ensure dosage instructions are understood
Action pathology results as requested by clinical staff and liaise with clinician for review/ treatment. Perform review / follow up phone calls when requested by clinician
When assisting a clinician to ensure medical records are checked for outstanding chronic disease including health checks ie smears and arrange reviews
Make appropriate referrals within their remit when needed

Team Work
Where necessary the GPA will work with members of the wider Multi-disciplinary team for the co-ordination of patient care with in house and with other services.
