As our business continues to grow in scale and complexity, we are looking to appoint a Head of Engineering to lead our multi-disciplinary engineering function within one of our core business units, SCX. This pivotal role will provide strategic technical leadership across mechanical, structural, electrical, controls, software and functional safety engineering disciplines—ensuring design integrity, engineering excellence, and high-performance delivery throughout the full project life-cycle.

Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Governance
- Lead, develop, and manage a high-performing engineering team across multiple disciplines (mechanical, structural, electrical and controls), promoting a culture of quality, integrity, and continuous improvement.
- Deploy and applying systems engineering principles and. Lead and manage requirements and compliance activity, build and manage safety case and design substantiation arguments.
- Lead and assure risk assessments, design and safety case substantiation.
- Lead and assure that safety, compliance and cost are balanced appropriately.
- Management of project scope with consideration of the technical, commercial and schedule implications.
- Oversee deployment of engineering strategy, governance, and assurance in accordance with internal policies and external regulatory standards.
- Own the definition and implementation of engineering best practices across concept development, detailed design, analysis, testing, and through-life support.
- Ensure that designs and technical decisions meet the highest safety, performance, and compliance standards.
Project Delivery & Technical Oversight
- Provide senior-level technical direction on projects.
- Coordinate and integrate multi-disciplinary engineering outputs to ensure alignment with client needs, project schedules, and commercial constraints.
- Champion for delivering cost-compliant solutions across the project lifecycle.
- Guide root cause analysis and resolution of critical engineering challenges and risks.
- Drive robust technical reviews and lead the validation and verification of engineering outputs.
Client Engagement & Stakeholder Management
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, partners, and regulatory bodies, representing engineering expertise with confidence and credibility.
- Translate complex technical issues into business-relevant communication for stakeholders, supporting trust and transparency.
- Contribute to bid development, technical proposals, and scope definition in support of business growth.
People Management & Capability Development
- Line manage, coach, and develop a multi-skilled engineering team, supporting their professional growth and performance.
- Promote knowledge sharing, cross-functional collaboration, and succession planning across disciplines.
- Champion diversity, inclusion, and technical mentorship.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Stay at the forefront of industry developments, technology trends, and regulatory changes across relevant sectors.
- Identify opportunities for innovation in engineering methods, digital tools, and system performance.
- Implement data-driven improvements to engineering workflows, resource planning, and quality assurance.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, or a related Engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or demonstrable capability and intent to achieve this.
- Proven leadership experience in a senior engineering or head-of-function role within high-integrity or safety-critical sectors.
- Deep working knowledge of engineering governance, compliance standards (e.g. BS, ISO, EN), and design assurance processes.
- Experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and delivering complex engineered solutions to time and budget.
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance technical excellence with business outcomes.
- Excellent interpersonal, influencing, and presentation skills—able to engage effectively at all levels internally and externally.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical systems design including structural elements, actuation, controls integration, and installation methodologies is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with engineering tools, methods and document control systems.
Location: Sheffield (with flexible hybrid working arrangements)
Travel: Occasional travel to client sites, suppliers, and group locations across the UK and internationally.
