Salary-£35,000 - £38,000 per annum

The Role


We are seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Officer on a permanent basis to assist the Head of Health and Safety in supporting both internal and external customers. This role is crucial in ensuring operational health and safety practices are maintained and continually improved.


This role will require regular travel to schools and central office hubs to undertake audits and inspections. Regular travel is required up to four days per week and will include overnight stays.


Key Responsibilities


  • Provide health and safety advice and support (within your level of competence).
  • Ensure continual professional development (CPD) on IOSH to keep skills and knowledge up-to-date with current legislation and guidance.
  • Undertake audits and inspections at sites across England, develop action plans to improve performance, and track their implementation.
  • Provide guidance and support with national and local health and safety management following the Plan-Do-Check-Act model.
  • Assist with updating health and safety compliance systems to ensure defensible records.
  • Track data, identify patterns and trends, and prepare compliance reports to highlight vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with schools' Health and Safety Leads, LGB leads, and Health and Safety Union representatives to support Heads with their delegated duties.
  • Conduct due diligence checks on new schools joining the Trust and provide health and safety onboarding support.
  • Support the Group’s compliance with statutory obligations under relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.


Internal Customers


  • All employees across United Learning (Academy Schools, Independent schools and Central Office – Peterborough and London).
  • Chief Executive, Board, and Trustees.


External Customers:


  • Local Authorities, Fire Authority, Health and Safety Executive, Environmental Health and Food Standards Agency.
  • Voluntary sector agencies, ISI/OFSTED, private companies.


Qualifications and Experience


  • Minimum of Level 3 in Occupational safety and Health/ NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • TechIOSH and undertaking regular CPD.
  • Proven experience in a health and safety role.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible, highly organised, proactive.
  • Able to multi-task and prioritise work to meet deadlines.
  • Helpful approachable and positive attitude.
