Hours: 37

Contract: Permanent

Are you looking for a rewarding challenge? Would you like to be part of making positive changes to someone’s life?

We have the opportunity for a Health & Wellbeing Officer to join our existing Health & Wellbeing Team, working with individuals aged 16 years and over across Cumberland, who would like to make positive changes to their lives and will have a specific focus on quitting smoking.

Most of the people we work with have faced a period of crisis or have multiple issues that they need to understand and work through, making this role both challenging and extremely rewarding for the right person.

About The Role

Within the role, you will need to able to adopt a coaching approach and have the personal skills to build trusting and authentic relationships with individuals in our community. You will work in a non-directive style, help people to stop smoking and motivate them to make positive changes, whilst also understanding and reducing any barriers to change.

Smoking remains one the biggest causes of death and ill health in the UK. As part of the local authority’s commitment to becoming Smoke Free in 2030, funding has been allocated to the Health &Wellbeing Team to provide people who smoke the opportunities to access appropriate support to quit smoking at the right time for them.

For some people, quitting and staying smoke free is more problematic therefore these roles will focus on:

  • a) supporting people from the 20% most deprived communities who have, for example, mental health, homelessness, and substance misuse.
  • b) supporting people who are on a respiratory health pathway including targeted lung health checks, people receiving enhanced health checks and people who are part of the Waiting Well project.
  • c) supporting people from groups where smoking rates are high for example unemployed, those that work in retail, hospitality, and manual & routine workers
  • d) supporting people in communities without a universal service offer.

The Role Offers

  • One to one and group work with a focus on behaviour change
  • Provide aids and NRT to aid quitting.
  • Deliver a rolling 12-week programme of support for those wanting to quit.

Who We Are Looking For

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Coach people to take action on factors that influence health and wellbeing - primary smoking.
  • Work alongside people to reduce health inequalities by understanding inequality and identify ways in which they can address and sustain changes into the future.
  • Help build independence and resilience to meet future crisis.
  • Understand and challenge behaviours, raise awareness and build personal responsibility.
  • Engage with our local communities and social networks, but also link the people we support together and encouraging them to create self-led community/social groups.

We would love to hear from anyone who could be a great asset to our team. If this sounds like you, then please apply today!

We plan to hold online sessions via Teams for anyone who is interested in applying for the role and would like some further information. If you would like to receive an invite to a session, please email [email protected]
