Job Description
This role works closely with the Product Manager for Hull Mounted Sonar, HMS System Design Authority and HMS Programme Manager on UK and International Programmes, partnering with other UM Lines of Business (Australia, Canada, US) and global clients. As the HMS Engineering Manager you will be responsible for successfully delivering engineering activities to time, cost and quality across all engineering aspects of the HMS portfolio. You will lead a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that solutions meet requirements and are fit for purpose.
This senior role will suit someone with a background in maritime, sonar or acoustics who has extensive experience of work package management and engineering delivery. Ideally you will have:
- Delivered high value, complex engineering projects in an Engineering Manager or Engineering Lead role
- Experience of product-based engineering
- Experience of managing teams of teams
- Experience of engineering estimation, with the ability to review, challenge and defend estimates
- Created Work Breakdown Structures and defined delivery strategies
- Experience of producing engineering plans with dependencies, assumptions, risk and opportunities identified, communicated and managed
- A good understanding of the different design gates a project goes through, from bid to full scale production readiness review, ideally as part of a defined Lifecycle Management process
- Experience of influencing a programme to lead to the most cost efficient yet compliant solution
- Experience of engaging with and presenting to senior level management (e.g. Senior Leadership Team (SLT), CEO)
- Coaching and/or mentoring experience
This role requires eligibility for Security Check (SC) clearance (ideally with no caveats). Ideally you will be a Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartership.
We have three sites: Greenford, Loudwater and Weymouth. This is a hybrid role giving you the flexibility to balance working from home and being on-site as necessary, with occasional UK and International travel.
To be successful in the is role you are likely to need to be regularly on site at Weymouth e.g. a couple of days per week.
There will be a two-stage interview process. The first will be with the Director of Engineering Delivery and an Engineering Manager, and the second will be with the Product Manager for HMS and Programme Manager. The first will cover the role and technical suitability and the second will focus more on leadership and business/team fit, with a short presentation on how you would go about establishing yourself as the HMS Engineering Manager.
