The role
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the North-West Wales Waste Regulation team to protect and enhance the environment of Wales through effective and efficient regulation of industrial installations and waste sites. These include non-hazardous and hazardous waste transfer and treatment sites, biowaste treatment sites, scrap metal sites, and closed landfills. The role also involves dealing with illegal waste sites and associated enforcement.
The successful applicant will work out in the environment, responding to reports of environmental incidents in a safe, efficient, and timely manner, while undertaking appropriate investigation and enforcement work. Following our Regulatory Principles, you will ensure compliance with the relevant regulations, such as the Environmental Permitting Regulations, undertake proportionate enforcement actions, and achieve tangible environmental benefits through appropriate regulatory interventions.
This is a dynamic and rewarding role, providing the opportunity to lead environmental improvements by collaborating with customers to enhance the wellbeing of local communities through environmental compliance. You will work with a dedicated team of like-minded individuals, all committed to improving the environment of North-West Wales in line with our Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) principles.
The role will include both site work undertaking regulatory inspections of permitted and unpermitted waste management sites, and office-based working. You will occasionally be required to travel to other offices.
Additionally, you will be required to participate in pollution incident response as part of a rota, working both in and out of hours.

The team consists of 11 posts which are made up of Industry & Waste regulations and enforcement officers. This post will cover the whole of the North West area.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to an NRW office within the place base / location above and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Vetting checks may be required depending on the role. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 6 weeks of the closing date.
What you will do
- Assess compliance at installations and waste sites.
- Take appropriate actions to collect evidence for enforcement purposes, in accordance with defined procedures.
- Where non-compliance is identified, recommend the most appropriate intervention option to ensure operators return to compliance as quickly as possible, with minimum environmental impact and consideration of the economic impacts.
- Assist in the development of medium-term regulatory strategies for regulated sites.
- Respond to incidents and complaints.

Your Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge And Skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method .
- Knowledge and experience of either working in a regulated industry or as a regulator.
- Good understanding of commercial business processes and pressures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with regulated business and the public, explaining issues and gaining support by influencing.
Welsh Language Level Requirements
- Essential: Level C1 - Proficiency level (fluent Welsh speaker)
- Desirable: Level C2 - Higher proficiency level (fluent in both spoken and written Welsh)
