Job summary
Step into a role that offers the opportunity to work in an expanding, modern service with state-of-the-art technology as well as the flexibility you value. We’re looking for an Interventional Radiologist who’s excited for professional development, thrives in a collaborative environment and is ready to help shape an extraordinary service.
As a Trust we have worked hard to expand and modernise the service. We’ve got a newly refurbished 45m² suite with Siemens Artis-Q, Dyna CT, Cydar AI, IVUS, lithotripsy as well as a 5-bed radiology day unit of which over 70% of vascular interventions are now done as day cases with the team regularly hitting their 5-day C-quin targets. We also have exciting plans looking ahead! In 2025 we are opening our brand new 79m² hybrid IR theatre as part of our new surgical and critical care wing.
The Radiology Department delivers a comprehensive imaging and interventional service, supporting the needs of a busy District General Hospital. We understand that maintaining wellbeing and a healthy work-life balance is essential in a busy clinical environment, which is why we offer flexibility within job plans and working arrangements - including the option of a hybrid role. Home PACS access is available for colleagues who wish to work remotely for part of the week, providing the comfort and convenience of reporting from home.
AAC interview date: To be confirmed.
Main duties of the job
Taunton is a British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) exemplar site. Approximately 18.5k IR procedures were performed across the trust in 2023/2024.
You will be supported in the development of new services and encouraged with specific areas of interest. As part of the team, you’ll take part in the non-resident 1:6 interventional on-call rota based at the Musgrove Park site. You’ll be well supported by a fantastic team of experienced Interventional Nurses and Radiographers who help ensure smooth and efficient care during on-call shifts. Importantly, there is no diagnostic on-call requirement.
You’ll also be involved in a variety of rewarding work, including image-guided biopsy and drainage lists, supporting general vascular and aortic aneurysm MDTs, running an IR clinic, and reporting on regional vascular imaging. There’s also a small contribution to general reporting to help support the wider team.
In this role, you’ll play a key part in the Somerset and North Devon vascular network, supporting a population of over 800,000 across North Devon, Yeovil, Taunton, and Somerset. Emergency vascular procedures, aneurysm work and imaging are centralised at the Taunton site which also handles elective referrals from Yeovil and provides a spoke service to North Devon for day-case angioplasties. You’ll enjoy a varied and rewarding caseload, including a broad mix of non-vascular IR referrals from across the region.
GIRFT review 2025 Notable good practice:
“Taunton is a busy, high volume IR centre, particularly for vascular IR. This is impressive given the size of the department. Vascular IR service includes infra-renal EVAR and its complications, with good data from the site on the National Vascular Registry (NVR)”.
“Team ethos and dynamics at both sites: evidence of great team working within and between the consultant, nursing, sonography and radiography teams. Radiology trainees consistently rate the trust highly and gave positive feedback at the visit’’
