The role

At Abselion we are looking for a Junior Software Engineer to support and extend our software across the full stack. This role is suitable for recent graduates seeking their first full-time role.

You'll be working as part of the engineering team as our primary software engineer to maintain and develop the software that powers our analytical lab devices.

You should be comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and be able to communicate clearly with our business and lab team to effectively capture and iterate requirements for complex scientific workflows. You'll also be working very closely with our electronic and mechanical engineers to accommodate changes to our firmware or hardware, and to assess feasibility and timelines for new features.

As a small company you'll be expected to wear many hats and regularly work on a variety of topics outside of your core area. This includes for example supporting the marketing team with technical input into the website, IT infrastructure issues, or carrying out software updates in the field.

Your responsibilities

• User interface

- Gather user feedback

- Implement customer requirements

• Database management

- Maintain the user and analytical databases

- Expand and roll out LIMS

• Machine control

- System and Unit tests to increase robustness

- Implement new features on existing hardware

• Product Development and design

- Contribute to fast turnaround of new concepts and hardware prototypes

- Enable data capture and robust prototype experimentation

- Work within software development lifecycle, and engineering change request process

• Team technical expert

- Help across all disciplines bringing technical knowledge to a variety of situations

Requirements

• One of:

- BSc in Computer Science/Software Engineering

- Physics or engineering degree with significant software component

- 3+ years software development experience in instrumentation

• Strong ability to write clean code in python
• At least one more strongly typed, object-oriented language (C++, C#, Java, etc)
• Very strong communication skills and ability to work independently to meet deadlines
• A demonstrated ability to rapidly pick up new skills in context and apply them at a high level.
• A good understanding of git
• A passion for designing modern and intuitive user experiences

Desired

• Experience with typescript and react is a big bonus
• Experience with redux toolkit and RTK Query
• Experience with a python backend framework (Flask, Django, fastAPI etc)
• Exposure to NoSQL databases
• Good understanding of, or background in bioscience at any level
