Location – The Harborne Hospital, Birmingham

Permanent and Full-time 37.5 hours per week

About The Role

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, the role of the Lead Duty Nurse Manager is to lead and operationally manage a twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week, Clinical Site Management team to ensure the provision of effective site management, including direct responsibility for the management and direction of bed usage and admission pathways throughout the hospital. The Lead Duty Nurse Manager will keep the CNO and Senior Leadership team updated regarding flow, blockages and solutions, and will work collaboratively with the Matrons

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Clinically responsible for overseeing patient safety on site. This is enabled by taking a handover of all patients on site, escalating to consultants and RD’s when necessary, and support of admissions and stepdown from ITU. Working in collaboration with the ITU nurse in charge to co-ordinate the emergency response team, taking a part of the team if necessary.
  • Maintain an overview of the standards of care delivered across defined clinical areas and take immediate action to remedy failures or refer to the Chief Nurse.
  • Lead as a clinical expert practitioner and role model for nursing standards, assisting colleagues to develop knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of patients in Urgent Care, Critical Care, Medical or Surgical Ward or Outpatient setting within the Hospital. Work collaboratively with the Reservations Department, ensuring effective and efficient allocation of beds for patients who are due to be admitted
  • The Lead Duty Nurse Manager will ensure clear escalation pathways are embedded to support safe decision making for staffing out of hours. This will include an understanding of HCA workforce metrics, managing staff ratio, mitigating against absence and managing TOIL.
  • Be the main point of contact and escalation for the hospital facilitating service delivery and business continuity whilst displaying the HCA values at all times.
  • Maintain a high clinical profile through daily “Rounding” of the clinical areas and regular quality ward/department rounds.
  • Monitor and deal with complaints with the aim of reducing the number of complaints that occur. Acts as an IO when appropriate

Skills And Experience

  • NMC (RN) qualified with acute sector experience within the last 5 years
  • Experience within a leadership role and managing people highly desirable
  • Ability to revolve conflict / difficult behaviour
  • ALS qualification
