Working in the MEICA team of the South East Water (SEW) Engineering Department you will report to the Senior Mechanical Engineer and be responsible for the mechanical engineering output as part of a project team(s) on capital engineering schemes.
As a client-side Mechanical Engineer you will be involved across all stages of project delivery, from feasibility, optioneering, scoping, design, through to construction and commissioning, as part of a multi-disciplinary project team. You will input and contribute to technical deliverables on Capital Projects under direction from the respective Project Managers and the Senior Mechanical Engineer, in accordance with the requirements set down by the Lead MEICA Engineer and relevant asset standards.
You will be expected to manage and prioritise your own workload to meet the demands of various ongoing projects, both small and large scale. You will adhere to Health and Safety/CDM requirements, actively identifying hazards and working towards mitigation or removal of hazards and risk through engineering design. A key part of the role is building and maintaining collaborative relations with your immediate peers in the Engineering team, internal customers and stakeholders in other SEW departments, and our framework contracting partners.
Although this role offers flexible/hybrid working (office/home), you will be expected to travel to any location or site within South East Water’s supply areas, as required, as part of the project(s) you are working on.

What will you be accountable for?
- Design and specifications for clean/potable water related projects, including treatment plant, pumped systems and pipework, chemical dosing, mixing.
- Design/analysis of hydraulic systems, including pump sizing & selection, head loss calculations & system curves, air valve design practices and implications/requirements of surge within a system.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and control systems including pressure, flow, level, and analytical instrumentation e.g. chlorine, turbidity, pH instrumentation and control;
- Building Engineering Physics and building services – heat, ventilation, noise, moisture.
- Interfacing with other disciplines and integration of those requirements with mechanical design
- Review of Contractor produced designs & deliverables in accordance with legislation, standards and specifications, and response to Technical Queries
- Project delivery under NEC Design & Construct and PSC contracts, and input into these contracts
What do you bring to the role?
- HNC or a Degree in Engineering or equivalent training in the relevant area.
- Technically sound/competent and knowing when to refer to others when required
- Good technical delivery on projects, with minimal issues/guidance required
- Work under pressure and progress work within budget and deadlines,
- Ability to work closely with others and communicate effectively,
- Engaged in continual professional development and knowledge of current and emerging technologies in the field, with an aim to obtaining professional registration (chartership etc)
- Full UK driving license
- Good technical report writing and editorial skills, and good oral communication.
- Competent IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite - knowledge of Google Workspace would be beneficial.
