United Utilities’ (UU) purpose is to deliver great water for a stronger, greener and healthier North West of England. We are committed to providing our services in a way that respects the environment, supports the economy, and benefits society.

We value diversity, inclusion and innovation in our workplace, and we foster a culture where our people can grow, excel, and be themselves.

We uphold our ethics, values and business model to fulfil our mission and, by setting clear goals and objectives, we create sustainable long-term value for our colleagues, customers and communities. Whether you work with a team that shares your vision or join a network of peers with similar interests, you will find a welcoming and supportive organisation to be part of.

The role

In the Engineering department you will join a large team working on real business projects, carrying out a variety of engineering tasks.

This is an opportunity to develop your mechanical engineering skills whilst gaining real world experience working alongside technical specialists and operational engineers solving problems that will impact customers and the environment.

You will gain an understanding of a wide range of projects in the wastewater side of the business, supporting one of our Mechanical engineers in an area deployed role. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team of engineers who support live operations across Merseyside and Cheshire

Throughout your placement, we will provide you with an overview of the wastewater process, and the engineering challenges it faces aiming to show how we treat wastewater in order to release it safely back into the environment. You will work on live projects aiming to improve our wastewater works, and gain a deeper understanding of the mechanical principles applied to the work we do.

You will benefit from the shared knowledge within the UU Mechanical Engineering & Operational Teams and expertise of working with colleagues across the wider Engineering disciplines. We will help you develop your own specialist skills whilst providing a valuable contribution to the team.

In addition, we aim to provide you with awareness days of the rest of our operations, aiming to show you our clean water and bioresources processes. You'll see how we carefully produce clean safe drinking water, and how we generate gas and power through the waste products of our treatment works.

You will also get the opportunity to mix with our current graduates who can share experiences, tips, and guidance with you for the next steps in your career. Working alongside other graduates you will see how United Utilities operate their accredited IMechE MPDS scheme and how we support your development towards chartership.
