Job Title- Pathology Service Delivery Manager Infection Science & Cellular Pathology

Location- Hub Laboratory, Taunton (Essential Service Laboratories Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District hospital)

Hours- 37.5 hours per week

Salary- £63,958 - £74,319 + performance bonus scheme + £5000 relocation and £10,000 welcome bonus


We are seeking an experienced, driven and inclusive Leader to join our laboratory team at Southwest Pathology Services (SPS) as a Service Delivery Manager. SPS laboratories have a rich and extensive test repertoire offering the diversity and interest of a city location but with the added bonus of being in the heart of the Somerset countryside, within easy reach of beautiful coastlines, rolling hills and bustling cities.


Reporting to the General Manager (GM), the successful candidate will be accountable for managing the workforce, operational performance, budget, and strategic planning for Infection Science and Cellular Pathology across our three sites in Taunton and Yeovil.


Our team at SPS have been fundamental to the principle of making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for over a decade and this role is pivotal in ensuring the successful and efficient delivery of pathology services in alignment with our corporate objectives and customer contracts. The Service Delivery Manager will play a key leadership role in maintaining an inclusive workplace culture, driving productivity, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within their areas of responsibility.


SYNLAB UK & Ireland has extensive experience of working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through its existing pathology joint ventures - including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS). At SPS there is also the opportunity to work on private contracts as well as supporting our partner businesses.


You will have the opportunity to work in a laboratory which takes a leading technological approach including state of the art third generation Kiestra Total Lab Automation for Microbiology culture and Digital slide scanning and Cerebro Tracking system in Histology.

We hold ISO 15189 UKAS accreditation and are an IBMS approved training Laboratory for both pre- and post- registration certification in Infection Sciences (Microbiology and Virology) and Histopathology.


Responsibilities:

You will hold a variety of accountabilities in the laboratory environment. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure the most effective and efficient use of resources to deliver a high quality service that achieves the required performance targets in line with SYNLAB’s core values.
  • Provide clear leadership and direction on service improvements.
  • Provide senior leadership and people management to recruit and retain high quality staff, provide effective appraisal and promote team working and strong staff involvement in decision making appropriate to their level of responsibility. This will include long term workforce planning and development.
  • Lead development and implementation of activities to improve staff engagement, including responding to themes that arise from SYNLAB annual and pulse staff surveys.
  • Manage employee availability and shift allocation to ensure required employee resource levels, including where necessary, and within budget, temporary staffing requisitions, time sheet approval and overtime.
  • Drive forward productivity improvements in area(s) of responsibility
  • Overseeing capital investment planning for Infection Science and Cellular Pathology services.
  • Demonstrate good financial stewardship in order that the service can be delivered within the constraints of the allocated resources.
  • In conjunction with the Principal Biomedical Scientists/Advanced Practitioners, ensure that all areas of responsibility comply with legislation and conform with ISO 15189 and the recommendations from recognised professional bodies.
  • Ensure the delivery and continuity of a diagnostic pathology service that enables high standards of patient care, maintaining all regulatory accreditation whilst delivering service improvement initiatives.
  • Take a lead role in activities across Southwest Pathology Services as delegated by the General


Qualifications and experience:

  • BSc (Hons) IBMS accredited degree or equivalent
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Specialist portfolio in relevant discipline or equivalent experience (if HCPC Registration via IBMS Portfolio route) or FIBMS
  • MSc, FIBMS or equivalent experience in a similar role
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • Management Qualification equivalent to ILM Level 5 or above ( or evidence of equivalent management training)
  • Evidence of extensive people management responsibility. Able to evidence appropriate use of formal procedures.
  • Leadership qualities with experience of coaching, co-ordinating and managing a team
  • Line management including all aspects of people management, for example recruitment and rota management
