Principal Engineer – Product Safety to join the Product Safety & Compliance department in a rapidly expanding and exciting work environment.
About The Role
An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Engineer for Product Safety to join our Product Safety and Compliance team during a rapidly expanding and exciting time of growth. Working at the forefront of technology, you’ll be leading an engineering team within the Decarbonisation & Heavy Industry Business Unit to ensure that safety is at the heart of the design and development of cutting-edge products.
What You Will Do
- Lead an engineering team to deliver safety analysis activities and provide technical sign-off of components & systems in accordance with customer and project targets
- Coach and mentor members of the safety team to grow the skills of all members of the team and drive best practice into our safety assessment process
- Be a subject matter expert in the field of the domain, and the point of contact for technical advice / input.
- Aid the delivery of the R&D technology development for future application, including engaging with academic and professional institutions, and supplier base.
- Identify and enact delivery of supply of capacity and capability to meet business engineering demand, including recruitment, and supporting contracting and outsourcing function capability.
- Allocation of Engineering resource from their team to deliver above through project teams in business units
- Delivering the career and capability development of the Engineering team within set frameworks incl early careers, talent identification etc.
- Work with the Head of Engineering to identify the Learning and Development opportunities and needs within the engineering team and work with administrators and L&D function to implement.
- Support outsourcing work packages where capacity vs capability requires to ensure delivery of projects.
- Develop process, system and way of working within their team, or as a part of a wider working group.
- Aid resolution of complex technical issues as an SME within Product Safety.
- Aid Business Units with business development opportunities where requested, including client meetings, feasibility work, tender and costing support.
About You
- An engineering qualification in a STEM subject or equivalent e.g. HND, Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree, Apprenticeship) and previous experience in Functional or System Safety.
- Experience applying IEC61508 or any of its derivatives such as EN50126/8/9 (rolling stock), ISO13849 (machinery control systems), ISO19014 (Earth Moving Machinery), ISO26262 (automotive), ARP4754 and ARP4761 (aerospace), ISO61511 (Process Industry), etc. to development programmes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude, willing to support and collaborate with other team members and engineering functions.
- A passion for improving sustainability through the development of cutting-edge technical solutions.
- An understanding of energy storage systems and/or controllers is desirable.
