Job Description
Let’s talk numbers. When it comes to UK retail, it’s hard to find a bigger name. We sell thousands of items an hour and are expanding our e-commerce business by the second. For anyone in Tech, this is the place to learn. To grow. And to thrive.
Our websites and apps have grown steadily over the past 10 years to become one of the largest online retail platforms in the UK. We currently sell to 70 international markets, offering our 6 million active customers a personalised shopping experience and the ability to purchase from a wide range of products using multiple delivery methods and payment types.
Our Mainframe team is at the heart of our Next Technology, supporting the operations and constant change that comes with running the show here across multiple sites, countries, languages and currencies! The NextPay team specifically handles the maintenance, progression, and improvements of our in-house credit offering.
The role
Project management. Team management. Stakeholder management. These are three core areas of your role as a Product Development Manager. Get these right and you’ll be able to successfully ensure our teams run smoothly, providing business continuity and supporting critical business events. As a PDM, you manage the team and manage stakeholder expectations. As part of the department leadership team, you’ll also contribute strategic insights and operational improvements that boost team success – plus morale, profile and reputation. This role is focused on ensuring FCA compliance and effective collaboration with business stakeholders.
You’ll oversee project delivery in a highly collaborative and agile framework, specifically driving agile ways of working through a mainframe based team. You will provide ongoing communication to ensure that progress is transparent and aligned to the quality and standards expected by the stakeholders and IT governance.
Day-to-day, your responsibilities will include:
- Line managing and coaching a squad of developers, a business analyst and a scrum master.
- Managing a portfolio of development projects focused on the maintenance, progression, and improvements of our in-house credit offering.
- Working closely with our key business stakeholders in Credit & Risk, the Contact Center, and eCommerce to identify and validate business requirements as well as strategic business drivers.
- Collaborating effectively with cross-functional tech teams within Tech, such as Online Ordering, eCommerce and Payments.
- Budget control.
- Communicating project status, risks and issues.
- Ensuring we remain FCA compliant and understanding the role of compliance within the wider teams.
- Ideally, exploring how AI can enhance developer workflows and how that could be brought into business as usual for the development teams.
What we’re looking for:
- Solid project management credentials gained in a technical environment, with experience managing medium to large projects.
- Experience handling stakeholder needs, requests and relationships.
- Strong leadership skills, with previous team management experience.
- A driver of agile methodologies within a mainframe environment. Exposure to Agile practices specifically Scrum and Kanban is beneficial.
- FCA compliance knowledge and experience. Understanding the role of compliance is equally as important.
- Experience working with third-party integrations would be really beneficial.
- Ideally, some understanding of how AI can enhance workflows and demonstrable experience implementing it.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience or knowledge of working in a Mainframe Technical environment would be beneficial. While some mainframe development knowledge (like COBOL and DB2) would be desirable, it is not a strict necessity for the role.
You’ll be doing all this from our Leicestershire Head Office on a hybrid basis. A fast-paced, encouraging and supportive environment in which everyone brings an energy and a commitment to delivering for our customers and their own careers. Bring your energy. Play to your strengths. Make things bigger and better than before. Let’s Take It On.
So if you’ve got solid project management credentials gained in a technical environment, great team management skills, and experience handling stakeholder needs, requests and relationships, this is the place for you – and your career.
