Transpennine Route Upgrade
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is the largest Infrastructure project in the North delivering £10.7 billion Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.
Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 11 level crossings.
Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.

Brief Description
You will be working in the West of Leeds Alliance where construction is in full swing along the whole of the TRU route between Huddersfield and Leeds.
Major buildings and civils highlights include the reconfiguration and reconstruction of the Grade 1 Listed Huddersfield Station, reconstruction of local stations to accommodate the quadrupling of the railway, a grade separated junction with flyover structure and a 350m long multi-span four-track viaduct across the River Calder.
Supporting construction activities will be a key focus of your role, so experience in temporary works assurance is essential.
A collaborative working relationship with both the Construction and Design teams will be essential to deliver the project to cost, programme and quality.
Ideal Candidate:
We are looking for an experienced and motivated civil engineer who can work collaboratively to achieve project delivery timescales and is happy to be co-located with delivery teams in Alliance offices at least 3 days per week giving the best opportunity for successful outcomes.
Working on the TRU West of Leeds Alliance provides an exciting opportunity to play a vital role on the largest infrastructure project on the railway in the North of England and help leave a lasting legacy for businesses and communities across the region.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the following areas to ensure compliance, safety, and effective project delivery:
- NR/L2/RSE/02009 : Engineering Management for Projects.
- NR/L2/CIV/003 : Engineering and Architectural Assurance of Building and Civil Engineering Works.
- BS5975 : Temporary Works.
About The Role (External)
Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:
- Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects, compliant with all relevant legislation. Liaise with regulators and others as appropriate.
- Engineer Projects to the standards and specification of Network Rail, allocated design and construction contracts include reference to and are compliant with appropriate Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards, formal specifications and procedures.
- Manage all engineering activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality.
- Monitor design and specialist consultants and contractors.
- Provide project management advice in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. Manage the design and/or construction elements of relevant projects meet the requirements of current legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.
- Internal and contractor’s design/construction/specialists personnel are competent.
- Undertake reviews of design and/or construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors monitoring safety, environment and quality of design, construction, testing and commissioning and management systems is adequate.
- Identify and share best practice across the various project teams.
- Adopt a proactive, can-do / will-do approach in all our working with all project participants to help support and achieve project goals.
We need you to have:
- Relevant experience in engineering disciplines, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas.
- Technical qualifications to HNC/HND or equivalent GNVQ level.
- Knowledge of quality assurance.
- An understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of work.
- CDM, risk assessment, engineering management competency.
It would be advantageous if you have:
- Membership of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.
- An appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.
- Project safety management experience
- Previous experience as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer or Project Engineer
