A permanent Project Engineer/Senior Project Engineer - Marine role, based in Portishead, North Somerset.

Your new role


The Project Engineer/ Senior Project Engineer - Marine, will lead all engineering related to heavy lift transportation and activities in the marine environment including but not limited to;


  • Load out engineering
  • Load in engineering
  • Ballast engineering and management of ballast operations on dumb barges and barges with internal ballast systems
  • Structural design
  • Sea fastening design
  • Management of marine activities and scopes of work across the UK, Europe and globally where required
  • Act as main focal point for all technical requirements for marine operations across the group
  • Supporting the Engineering Manager/Director, lead on the ongoing development of the marine engineering discipline at Osprey by implementing best-in-class standards and procedures
  • Manage, mentor and guide junior members of the marine engineering team.


The ideal candidate will have:


  • Extensive experience in engineering and delivering major load-out scopes (including super-heavy) across the UK and globally in safety critical environments using all different methods (RoRo, LoLo, Float off, float over, strand jack launches)
  • Experience in engineering and performing technical management of projects and developing and mentoring teams.


The Project Engineer/Senior Project Engineer - Marine is accountable for:


  • Technical focal point – acting as a technical point of contact for the customer, site operations and project management teams; applies internally and externally.
  • Preparing engineering documentation – developing drawings, calculations, visualisations, manuals, risk assessments, method statements, stability calculations, sea fastening calculations, mooring analysis, structural design and other key documents; ensuring high levels of document quality and document control throughout the lifecycle of the project. Preparing and selecting both existing and renewed engineering statements.
  • Technical design and solutions – be responsible for and prepare all marine engineering for the projects department and barges operations. Using their expertise to devise smart engineering solutions for marine, heavy lifting and transportation projects.
  • Point of contact / supporting on-site engineering activities – conducting site visits to assess customer requirements, along with attendance during operations to manage and motivate the team. Acting as a point of contact for the customer and site operation teams, along with attendance during operations to manage and motivate the team.
  • Conducting site visits - providing conceptual solutions for lifting operations.
  • Develop and execute - drawings, calculations, visualisations, manuals, risk assessments and other key documents to deliver the right results for the customer with a particular focus on safety and quality, whilst maintaining high standards of documentation quality and control through the lifecycle of the project.
  • Project delivery - ensuring efficient execution that delivers the right results for the customer with particular focus on safety and quality; working with internal project management teams to ensure engineering workflows are adhered to and delivered accordingly.


What you’ll need to succeed


The successful candidate will have:


Essential


  • A minimum 8-10 years’ experience in engineering and managing critical Load-out/in Marine Operations using barges.
  • Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in either Naval Architecture or Marine/Ocean Engineering especially marine-related discipline or significant demonstrable industry experience. Managing marine-based projects
  • Site experience including personnel management on site (e.g. managing ballast systems during load-out/in)
  • Relevant experience in heavy lift transport, shipping or lifting markets.
  • Proven experience of acting as a technical focal point.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering engineering solutions in the heavy lift industry.
  • Core Naval Architecture concepts.
  • Vessel stability.
  • Vessel mooring analysis, quasi-static & dynamic.
  • Hydrodynamic analysis and application in heavy lift industry.
  • Structural design
  • Project management methods
  • Report writing
  • Knowledge and experience of technical codes and standards.
  • Strong and demonstrable engineering skills (seakeeping, mooring analysis & installations, sea-fastening, structural design). Able to perform hand calculations and checks on design from first principles before the use of FEA software
  • AutoCAD
  • Intermediate Excel / Word / PowerPoint / Outlook
  • Excellent level of English, both verbal and written
  • Ability to successfully manage relationships internally and externally at all levels.
  • Flexibility and wiling to travel (the role is based in the Portishead office, where the engineering department is situated)
  • The nature of the work will see you spending sometime onsite, offshore, client meetings and other Osprey offices
  • High level of self-motivation and self-management ability
  • Must be able to work as part of a team
  • Able to learn new techniques and procedures
  • Able to solve ad-hoc problems quickly with clearly defined solutions

  • Current and valid passport, no restrictions.


Desirable


  • UK Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution (e.g. ICE, IMechE, IStructE, IET, RNIA).
  • Experience using other types of heavy lift equipment such as;
  • Crawler/Mobile cranes
  • Hydraulic installation equipment
  • Modular conventional transport
  • Experience with structural steel design to EC3
  • Experience with temporary works standard (BS5975).
  • Understanding of subsea oil and gas projects, their infrastructure and life cycle
  • Good understanding of the offshore oil and gas and offshore renewable industries
  • Good understanding of defence sector works and other safety-critical environments (e.g. Nuclear).
  • MathCAD
  • Clear understanding of the relevant equipment and its use
  • Proficient in use of Ansys Workbench OR other FEA software.


Please note if you are required to drive company vehicles as part of your role, you must hold a full clean UK driving licence. You must also hold valid right to work within the UK.
