SUMMARY OF ROLE:
The Ascot syndicate pricing function was officially formed in 2020 and is progressing a London-wide multi-year pricing transformation project. With the continued investment in the pricing space, Ascot are looking for a QA Engineer to join the Actuarial Development team with specialised skills and experience in software testing.
The role will provide support in the testing and maintenance of pricing models (in the form of webapps converted from excel workbooks) in the pricing tool software - Renew, developed by hyperexponential. This web-based SaaS pricing platform contains a full development environment to build the pricing models, using Python code and JS React UI components. The role is pivotal in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of pricing models developed in HX’s Renew platform as we continue to grow in the delivery of these models.
The QA Engineer will play a critical role in validating pricing models, managing test automation, and streamlining the release process. This role requires a strong understanding of software testing principles, automation frameworks, and stakeholder communication. Additionally, the QA Engineer will help improve the Agile workflow within the pricing team, ensuring efficient sprint cycles and timely updates.
This is a newly created role in the Actuarial Development function, providing a fantastic opportunity to establish best practices in QA, introduce automation efficiencies, and significantly contribute to the success of our pricing transformation initiative. There is potential for this to role to expand to support QA across actuarial within Reserving and Capital, particularly within Data Engineering.

The Team
The embedded Actuarial Development team work closely with the three core areas of the Actuarial Function; Pricing, Capital Modelling and Reserving. This role is focused on testing for the Pricing team, working closely with model developers from the Actuarial Development and Pricing teams as well as wider collaboration across actuarial.

The role is based in Ascot’s office in the City of London and will be a hybrid home/office working model.
Specific Job Responsibilities
Quality Assurance & Testing
- Develop and execute test cases to validate pricing models and ensure consistency in Renew.
- Conduct functional, regression, and performance testing of pricing models before release.
- Identify, document, and track defects, collaborating with actuaries and developers to resolve them.
- Validate data ingestion and export processes for accuracy and integrity.
- Own and support UAT process, overseeing the delivery of high-quality models.
- Triaging bugs and feature requests from underwriters and pricing team.
Test Automation & Reporting
- Maintain and enhance the existing automated testing framework using Python, Playwright, and Azure DevOps.
- Expand test automation coverage for regression testing of pricing models.
Agile & Stakeholder Management
- Champion Agile best practices, ensuring smooth sprint cycles and clear backlog prioritization.
- Own communication for testing phases, ensuring the right stakeholders are informed at the right time.
- Assist in sprint planning and retrospectives, helping to identify bottlenecks in the development cycle.
Other
- Proactive and positive contribution to the (Group) actuarial function with respect to culture and teamwork, contributing to the overarching objectives of the team.
- Identifying and developing synergies within pricing across Ascot entities.

Skills
Essential:
- 3-years' experience working in a development team as a QA analyst or engineer with strong understanding of software testing methodologies and best practices.
- 1-year experience working with test automation using Python and Playwright (or similar frameworks) or a very strong desire to learn.
- Knowledge of version control systems (Git, Azure DevOps).
- Exposure to working within CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps (or similar frameworks).
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and communicate testing progress effectively.
- Proactive mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with Agile methodologies and sprint management.
Desirable
- Experience working with SaaS platforms, such as HX Renew.
- Understanding of data formats such as JSON and CSV.
- Exposure to API testing.
- Creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps (or similar frameworks).
- Testing within a Data Engineering environment such as Data Warehouses/Lakehouses and ETL pipelines
- Familiarity with actuarial pricing models and the insurance industry.
