About the role


At StormGeo we rely on satellite imagery for many of our solutions, and we are thrilled to expand our team with a data engineer specializing in satellite data. In this key role, you’ll drive the evolution of StormGeo’s backend processes by maintaining and modernizing our satellite imagery pipelines. You’ll have the opportunity to shape our satellite data platforms, ensuring they align with both business needs and technological advancements.


The position will be based in one of our European offices, with a preference for Oslo, but other locations such as Stockholm, Vilnius, or Aberdeen are also possible. We are open to considering candidates based in other European countries where StormGeo has an office.

Main Responsibilities


  • Maintain and improve backend processes for satellite imagery data handling.
  • Innovate and optimize satellite data pipelines
  • Develop and align data platforms with strategic business and technological goals
  • Collaborate with the team to share insights and technical advice, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and mutual support
  • Provide operational support and troubleshoot data pipeline issues to ensure seamless performance.
  • Streamline satellite data ingestion processes by customizing scripts and tools to ensure seamless integration with our products.


Core Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, atmospheric science, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of programming experience in projects involving large-scale satellite data processing.
  • Strong knowledge of satellite data formats (e.g., netcdf, hdf, geotiff, COG, SHP, geoparquet, grib) and processing tools like GDAL, SNAP, or Python libraries.
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, and expertise in UNIX/Linux systems and scripting.
  • Confident in written and verbal English, with strong communication skills.
  • Bonus: Experience with atmospheric and ocean data processing, 24/7 operational environments, AWS cloud environments, version control (e.g., Git), data orchestration tools, unit testing and TDD methodologies or satellite data cataloguing.
