Responsible for: Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW) in their first year of practice.

:Job Purpose

Be responsible and accountable for supporting Newly Qualified Social Workers to consolidate their learning, develop their capability and confidence while providing assessment against the Knowledge and Skills Statement for Children and Families during their first year in practice.

To contribute to the development, design, and function of Sefton LA (Long Arm) Social Work Academy.

To promote the work of Sefton Social LA Academy across Childrens Services; ensuring links to Cheshire and Merseyside Teaching Partnership and relevant partners.

Ensure key performance targets as they apply to the Social Work Academy and ASYE, the service and the Council are met.

:Main Duties

  • Liaise with the Learning and Programmes Co-ordinator to ensure each NQSW is registered at the appropriate time with Skills for Care and provide day to day support and oversight to ensure work required to complete the ASYE is completed in a timely way.
  • Provide regular, reflective supervision for up to 10 NQSWs in line with Skills for Care expectations; (supervision in respect of the child and family) will be provided by Team Managers within the NQSW team. Be available to offer support at point of need and lead group supervision.
  • Promote ASYE as a positive and supportive framework to support the development of NQSWs and excellent social work practice in line with Knowledge and Skills Statements for child and family practice supervisors.
  • Undertake 3 direct observations of practice for each NQSW over the 12-month period: reviewing progress at 3, 6 and 12 months with a check in at 9 months.
  • Ensure necessary work is completed to support the 6 month review panel; to be chaired by the PSW.
  • Work with Team Managers to ensure that NQSWs are supported in their work and allowed to build confidence and experience during their first year of practice; working with a reduced number of children and families.
  • Work with Team Managers and others to ensure NQSWs are able to benefit, receive and access protected learning time available for NQSW; to reflect on their practice, enhance personal development and ensure completion of portfolio.
  • Chair meetings to a high standard, supporting NQSW as required.
  • Work with the Learning and Programmes Coordinator to ensure the training offer meets the needs of NQSW, promoting attendance on mandatory courses and other available training and opportunities.
  • Work with Team Managers and others to ensure that NQSWs reach the required level expected of ASYE; completing assessor aspect of the portfolio, quality assuring final panel documentation and attending ASYE panel as required to support recommendation.
  • Act as knowledge Champion by keeping abreast of latest research, ensuring dissemination of new information to meet the Knowledge and Skills statement (KSS) requirements, Social Work Professional Capability Framework (PCF) and Practice Standards at the relevant level to assess NQSWs effectively throughout the course of their ASYE programme.
  • Alert Learning and Programmes Coordinator of any individual performance issues or wider issues to be raised at Cheshire & Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership.
  • Attend and contribute to ASYE assessor forums and other regional opportunities.
  • Complete deep dive audits of work from across Childrens Services and contribute to dip sample activity.
  • Provide audit reports in respect of the work of ASYEs, ensuring mechanisms are in place that evidence outcomes and impact.
  • Actively promote and gain feedback from children and families to support service improvement and development.
  • Support recruitment and retention of NQSWs in consultation with the Practice Improvement Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with GDPR when working with a range of Information Systems. This includes the confidentiality, security, and quality of service user and client records.
  • Ensure the Councils Equality and Diversity Policies are adhered to.
  • Undertake all other duties as required and commensurate to the post. This may involve working with other departments and teams from across the Council.

Demonstrable understanding and application of the statutory framework which underpins social work

Experience of delivering high quality services to children and families; good assessment; plans and planning to include complex work with complex family situations.

Experience of practice education, mentoring students, and new starters

to include preparing inductions, facilitating supervision, observations of practice and reporting.

Experience of the application of systemic interventions and methodologies on social work practice; and willingness to increase knowledge.

Experience of working with teams, managers, and external partners to achieve good outcomes and demonstrate positive impact.

Experience of facilitating group work, training and cascading research, knowledge and learning across teams.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; to include preparation of evidence based written reports within fixed timescales

Knowledge of KSS standards and ability to quality assure professional documentation as part of the assessment of the NQSW.

Evidence of continued professional development to enhance own knowledge and skills; motivating and encouraging others to develop.

Commitment to ensuring the voice of children and young people is heard in all aspects of work undertaken, including direct work and recording.

Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office packages and experience of use of electronic case management systems.
