Our successful Church of England School is looking for an experienced non-teaching SENCO to champion the SEN provision for pupils identified as having Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND).

Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify SEN needs and maintain an accurate and up to date SEND register and records
  • Provide guidance to colleagues on teaching pupils with SEN or a disability and advise on the graduated approach to SEN support
  • Advise on the use of the school’s budget and other resources to meet pupils’ needs effectively
  • Be aware of the provision in the local offer
  • Work with other schools, cluster, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals and other external agencies to secure relevant services for pupils
  • Analyse assessment data for pupils with SEN or a disability
  • Review the education, health and care plan (EHCP and MSPs) with parents or carers and the pupil
  • Communicate regularly with parents or carers
  • Promote the pupil’s inclusion in the school community and access to the curriculum, facilities and extra-curricular activities
  • Work with the Head, SLT and Governors to ensure the school meets its responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements
  • Prepare and review information the school is required to publish, including writing reports as necessary
  • Effectively contribute to the school improvement plan and whole-school policy
  • Identify training needs for staff and how to meet these needs, including leading on relevant training sessions and INSET for staff
  • Promote an ethos and culture that supports the school’s SEN policy and promotes good outcomes for pupil SEN or a disability
  • To liaise and work closely with the ARP team onsite
  • To lead the Bungalow Provision (on site provision created to meet needs within school)
  • Ad-hoc class cover if needed

Responsibilities

Generic Responsibilities

  • All individual members of staff have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people they are responsible for or come into contact with on the school sites.
  • All staff must know about their roles and responsibilities under the terms of the school’s Safeguarding Policy, health and safety, data protection and confidentiality policies and report any concerns to the appropriate senior member of staff.
  • Staff must carry out their roles and responsibilities with due regard to their own, and others, health & safety.
  • All staff must know what to do in the event of the fire alarm sounding.
  • All staff have a responsibility to report potential, or actual health and safety issues, to the school’s health and safety officer.
  • All staff are required to follow all agreed school policies and procedures.
  • Staff should at all times set an example of personal integrity and professionalism.
  • Staff should be aware of and support difference to help ensure everyone has equal access to the services of the school and feels valued, respecting their social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic background.
  • Staff should uphold the school ethos, aims and contribute to the development and achievement of the school’s strategic and development plans.
  • Staff should be willing to work as part of a team, appreciating and supporting the role of other people within the team.
  • Staff should attend and participate in meetings as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • QTS qualified
  • Specific qualification(s) related to SEND or equivalent
  • Team Teach training or willingness to obtain such a qualification

Experience

  • Experience of working with a range of pupils with Special Educational Needs across key stages and transition
  • Experience of behaviour management techniques for groups and individuals with SEND
  • Experience of conducting relevant assessments to determine SEN needs
  • Experience of making reasonable adjustments within a mainstream setting in order to meet pupil needs and supporting staff with these
  • Line management experience, including effective delegation and coaching/developing others, and building and leading effective teams, including experience of managing staff performance

Knowledge & Understanding

The SENCO Should Have Knowledge And Understanding Of

  • The SEN Code of Conduct and its practical application
  • The EHCP process and the evidence needed
  • Behaviour management techniques for groups and individuals
  • Familiarity with a range of Special Educational Needs
  • Good understanding of curriculum and pedagogical issues related to extending pupil performance and the development of thinking skills
  • Good understanding of factors promoting effective transfer of learners from one phase of education to the next
  • Good understanding of the principles behind school improvement including school improvement planning, monitoring, review and evaluation of progress

The SENCO will be able to:

  • Make consistent judgements based on careful analysis of available evidence
