The opportunity

Join our OKRA.ai team as a Senior Data Engineer and be at the forefront of designing next generation extraction of key actionable insights from biomedical texts. You will support the development of scalable data pipelines, implement automation strategies, and establish best practices for data quality and governance. You will also mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive impactful data solutions.

Our preference is for colleagues to collaborate onsite in a hybrid capacity from either our Cambridge, UK or Leiden, Netherlands office. However, we are open to exploring flexible working arrangements during the recruitment process, and we welcome applications from candidates based outside these locations.

Role responsibilities

• Architect and implement scalable ETL frameworks and data ingestion solutions.
• Monitoring and optimising text extraction techniques, vector database integration, metadata enrichment strategies for ontologies and taxonomies.
• Optimize data pipelines for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Establish query optimization standards and best practices.
• Design and manage cloud-based data architectures using AWS (S3, Glue, etc.) and grounding LLMs with knowledge graphs to reduce hallucinations.
• Develop automation strategies for data processing and system monitoring.
• Lead technical discussions and align data engineering strategies with business objectives.
• Work with business stakeholders and translate their requirements into technical plans and solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to coding best practices.
• Define and enforce data governance policies and quality standards.
• Build robust data governance and efficient data management practices.

Do you have what we are looking for?

Skills & expertise

• Extensive experience in data engineering, with a strong portfolio of data-related projects.
• Extensive experience in data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, Luigi, Kedro, etc.).
• Expertise in Python, Bash, SQL.
• Expertise in handling unstructured scientific content and structured external data sets.
• Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and services (AWS is preferred).
• Proficiency in CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and version control (Git).
• Experience with real-time data streaming (Kafka, Spark Streaming, Flink, etc.), preferred.
• Knowledge of machine learning pipelines and AI-driven data solutions, preferred.
• Exposure to regulatory and compliance requirements in data processing, preferred.
• Experience with productionising LLMs, preferred.
• Ability to lead complex projects, make architectural decisions, and align strategies with business goals.
