Location

ONS operates a flexible hybrid working model across the UK, with colleagues linked to one of our contractual locations in Newport, Titchfield (Fareham), London, Manchester, Edinburgh and working between office and remote throughout the week.

As part of the hybrid working arrangement there is 40% a minimum office attendance requirement. Attendance is typically at your contractual office, with occasional travel to alternative locations. Due to estates constraints, there are currently temporary exceptions to this for colleagues based at Manchester who are required to attend the office for a minimum of 20% of their work time.

We are looking for forward-thinking people with a passion for Cloud technology, an eye for detail and stakeholder management skills to provide technical and procedural expertise working within our Corporate IT & Services Division at ONS.

You will be joining the Data Access Platform (DAP) team supporting a newly commissioned big data platform (Cloudera) where we are looking for someone to establish and embed Cloud best practices into the team. A passion for delivering good customer service putting users at the heart of every decision whilst maintain a secure system.

Job Description

Our Corporate IT & Services Division are looking for DevSecOps Engineers to join us, building our AWS capability in an exciting role for a newly commissioned Data Access Platform

The Digital Services Division invests in people and technology to drive the government’s Cloud first policy, delivering digital products and services using commodity Cloud. To achieve this, we embed and pioneer the use of Cloud technologies to drive statistics for the public good.

Responsibilities

Working alongside our Colleagues in Operations and Cloud. As a DevSecOps Engineer, you will be focusing on developing best practices and sharing into the wider team.

You will be:

  • Working on and become a subject matter expert in Cloud, especially AWS. Designing and developing infrastructure as code, source code repositories and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines to execute change on Cloud environments.
  • Working to ‘secure by design’ principles and you’ll help form those designs as part of our multi-skilled teams including security specialists, technical architects, and delivery managers.
  • Working closely with your immediate colleagues and the wider technical and business teams and oversee our collaborative Agile ways of working, including setting up and leading on workshops, providing steering on Agile ceremonies, and promoting project management working practices such as Kanban.
  • Coaching and support colleagues in all aspects of the work including non-functional requirements, ensuring availability, security, capacity, and performance for the platform.

Essential Skills Criteria

As a Senior DevSecOps Engineer, the ideal candidate would be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues supported by excellent communication and customer service experience.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and provide constructive feedback to colleagues in delivering technical solutions.
  • Have experience of administering Cloud technology in Amazon Web Services and understand security principles for Cloud infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with using ‘Infrastructure as Code’ tools such as Terraform, GitHub and CI/CD pipelines such as Concourse.
  • Familiarity with containers and container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with Big Data Platforms such as Cloudera Data Platform.
