Purpose of the Role
The Senior EC&I Engineer will lead the design, development, and delivery of Electrical, Control & Instrumentation systems across reputable and technically demanding projects. Operating as a key technical authority within the EC&I department, this role will ensure that system architectures are robust, compliant, and aligned with both customer requirements and regulatory standards.
You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors, and clients to define specifications, resolve complex technical challenges, and deliver high-integrity control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient operation of bespoke engineered solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full lifecycle of EC&I systems design, from concept and specification through to commissioning and handover.
- Define control system architectures, specify equipment, and lead hardware and software integration activities.
- Prepare and approve detailed engineering documentation including:
- Electrical Schematics and General Arrangements
- Control Philosophy and Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
- Cable Schedules, I/O Lists, and Panel Layouts
- Instrumentation Datasheets and Wiring Diagrams
- Develop PLC/HMI software and interface logic using platforms such as Siemens, Rockwell, or Schneider.
- Coordinate with mechanical, structural, and safety engineering teams to ensure integrated and cohesive system design.
- Conduct and lead design reviews, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and customer specifications.
- Manage third-party suppliers and panel builders, providing technical oversight throughout procurement, manufacture, and FAT.
- Support installation and commissioning activities, including troubleshooting and site acceptance testing (SAT).
- Act as a mentor to junior engineers, fostering technical growth and promoting knowledge sharing across the team.
- Liaise directly with clients to clarify technical requirements, report progress, and resolve emerging issues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute to project planning and risk management by providing technical inputs to project managers and planners.
- Support bids and proposals with technical insight, concept designs, and cost/time estimates for EC&I scope.
- Promote continuous improvement across EC&I processes, templates, and design tools.
Skills & Experience Required
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
- Substantial experience in delivering EC&I systems in complex or safety-regulated environments.

- Proficient in producing electrical drawings using CAD tools (e.g. AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
- Solid understanding of control system principles, instrumentation, motor control, and variable speed drives (VSDs).
- Familiarity with applicable standards and regulations such as BS EN 60204, BS 7671, and EMC/Low Voltage Directives.
- Demonstrable ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
- Skilled in technical documentation, stakeholder communication, and supplier management.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration.
- Experience in high-integrity or regulated sectors such as Nuclear, Defence, or Aerospace.
- Background in the design of Overhead Electrical Travelling Cranes (OHETCs), automated handling systems, or large-scale machinery.
- Hands-on experience in electrical panel design and PLC programming.
- Knowledge of Functional Safety standards (e.g. BS EN 61508, BS EN 62061, BS EN 13849).
- Competence with safety and verification tools such as SISTEMA or Amtech.
