Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.
We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.
We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What To Expect
As a Senior Electric Propulsion Unit Systems Engineer, you will join the EPU (Electric Propulsion Unit) Team based in Bristol. Sitting within the Power & BMS Squad, your team is responsible for delivering the electric motors, power electronics and associated thermal management system that propel our aircraft.
A typical day could range from managing the complete EPU requirements set, coordinating complex interface requirements across mechanical, electrical, communications and controls domains, to supporting safety analysis through FHA, FTA and FMEA processes.
Your ability to take ownership of system requirements from definition and development through validation and into verification, where evidence recording will be critical, will be key to your success in this role.
What You'll Do
- Lead the development and management of the complete EPU requirements set, taking inputs from internal experts, interface teams and EPU supplier.
- Lead requirements validation activities including requirements linking and applying techniques such as systemic textual analysis.
- Lead recording of Means of Compliance for requirements verification.
- Generate EPU system documentation such as boundary diagram, function tree, system description and interface control documentation.
- Support system safety analyses such as FHAs, FMEAs, FTAs.
- Engage with certification authorities and generate certification documentation.
Essential
What You'll Bring
- A degree in Electrical/Electronic/System Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 7 years experience delivering electric propulsion systems or other complex electrical/electronic systems.
- Experience managing the delivery of safety critical software and/or electronics to certification aerospace standards such as ARP4761, ARP4754, DO254, DO178C.
- Comfortable structuring requirements sets, wording clear and concise requirements and applying validation techniques to ensure correctness and completeness.
- Experience in applying techniques such as FHA, FTA, FMEA to ensure system safety and reliability standards are met.
- Knowledge and experience in communication protocols such as CAN and ethernet.
Desirable
- Understanding of the working principle and control of powertrain inverters, electric motors, electric powertrain performance and protection mechanisms.
- Experience working with hazardous voltage systems.
- Experience using HIL or test rigs for control system hardware and software verification activities.
- Experience of full product development cycle from concept to production and in-service.
- Familiarity with Requirements Management tools such as DOORS, JAMA, etc.
- Experience using data analysis and plotting tools such as Matlab, Python.
- Familiarity with software version control and configuration management.
