Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in one of our Central Engineering, Transport System Engineering, or Infrastructure Engineering teams and, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. The TfL Plant Team has expanded significantly in the last couple of years, and now covers London Underground, the Elizabeth Line and London Trams.

Our work remit ranges from large On-Track machines and On-Track Plant to smaller railway and civils plant. This is an opportunity to be part of a dynamic team that has process, standards, and collaboration at its heart.

This role involves the review of Plant and associated documentation as a part of technical and safety compliance for Plant Approval. This ranges from new machinery to engineering change control for modifications. This will include being the technical lead for the Plant Standards and liaising with industry working groups such as the RSSB and the M&EE.

The role involves office work and site work with a wide range of opportunities for self-development and specific technical training.

As a Senior Engineer the candidate will be expected to advise and mentor other Plant team members and assist the Professional Head of Plant with associated projects.

A key understanding of railway safety risk and mitigations is critical. Working independently, applying the candidate’s experience and knowledge to complex problems will be core to this role.

As a Senior Track Plant Engineer, you should have experience of the modification to or introduction of new plant, machinery, or vehicles. This should include demonstration of compliance with relevant standards, impact on maintenance and operations, compatibility with the specific railway environment and demonstration of safety. through the application of industry risk analysis methodologies. You will have experience in the development of Engineering standards or specifications, either relating to track plant or other interfacing disciplines (vehicles, track, signalling etc.). This should include an understanding of systems integration, impact on interface control and stakeholder management. You will have a working knowledge of health and safety legislation particularly that pertaining to the use of work equipment and machinery, this should be coupled with experience of the railway renewal/maintenance environment.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of design or assurance of railway plant or rolling stock
  • Experience in preparing or reviewing risk assessments relating to the use of machinery or engineering change impact assessment.
  • Knowledge of UK/European railway legislation.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience of writing and reviewing technical standards, specifications, bulletins, reports etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively including presentation skills.

Desirable

  • Experience of rail vehicle maintenance.,
  • Application of interoperability regulations.
  • Application of the supply of machinery safety regulations.
  • Engineering process design.
  • Formal health and safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH/NEBOSH).
  • Reliability, performance, and maintenance strategies.
