Senior Process Integration Engineer
(Chip, R&D, NPI, Wafer Fab Semiconductor)
Lumentum is seeking a Process Integration Engineer to join our Chip R&D team, focusing on the development and management of wafer fabrication processes for indium phosphide (InP)-based semiconductor optical components. This on-site role is based at our Caswell facility in Towcester, Northamptonshire, UK, with limited opportunities for hybrid working.
About the Role
The Chip R&D department drives the development and production of advanced lasers, modulators, receivers, and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for cloud and networking applications. As a Process Integration Engineer, you will play a key role in translating innovative device designs into functional, high-performing chips. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to address complex challenges, making a direct impact on Lumentum’s cutting-edge product portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate wafer fab processing steps to develop InP-based photonic semiconductor products, including coherent and direct detection components.
- Optimize existing wafer fab processes to enhance yield, reduce costs, and improve cycle times.
- Create and manage process flows and procedures within the wafer fab MES system.
- Monitor the development and performance of new products throughout the wafer fabrication process.
- Leverage analysis tools (e.g., SEM) to evaluate and improve processes.
- Develop and validate new process modules for innovative chip designs, ensuring scalability for volume production.
- Transfer new processes and chip designs into manufacturing environments.
- Utilize Six Sigma methodologies (e.g., FMEA, capability analysis, design for manufacturability/yield) to document and analyze processes.
- Present process performance and manufacturability insights using statistical data.
- Serve as the primary interface between the design team and operations/manufacturing teams.
- Provide long-term process expertise for chips after their transfer to production.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Degree (preferably PhD) in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Equivalent experience in a similar role will also be considered.
- Comprehensive practical knowledge of semiconductor wafer processing, particularly III-V materials, with expertise in several areas such as epitaxy, lithography, etching (dry/wet), dielectric/metal deposition, implant, and diffusion.
- Experience developing end-to-end device process flows and integrating new wafer processes.
- Strong ability to manage and execute complex engineering projects.
Desirable
- Knowledge of direct bandgap semiconductor materials.
- Previous industrial or production wafer fab experience.
- Familiarity with statistical methods and tools, particularly JMP software.
Skills/Competencies
- Strong analytical and scientific reasoning skills.
- Excellent organizational and team collaboration abilities.
- Effective technical leadership with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to travel internationally to collaborate with Lumentum’s engineering teams.
Additional Information
- Caswell is located in a rural area of Towcester, Northamptonshire, with limited public transport access, so having a car is necessary
